Mixed Finite Element Methods And Applications written by Daniele Boffi and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-02 with Mathematics categories.

Non-standard finite element methods, in particular mixed methods, are central to many applications. In this text the authors, Boffi, Brezzi and Fortin present a general framework, starting with a finite dimensional presentation, then moving on to formulation in Hilbert spaces and finally considering approximations, including stabilized methods and eigenvalue problems. This book also provides an introduction to standard finite element approximations, followed by the construction of elements for the approximation of mixed formulations in H(div) and H(curl). The general theory is applied to some classical examples: Dirichlet's problem, Stokes' problem, plate problems, elasticity and electromagnetism.

The ?nite element method is one of the major tools used in the numerical solution of partial di?erential equations. This book o?ers a fundamental and practical introduction to the method, its variants, and their applications. In presenting the material, I have attempted to introduce every concept in the simplest possible setting and to maintain a level of treatment that is as rigorous as possible without being unnecessarily abstract. The book is based on the material that I have used in a graduate course at Southern Methodist University for several years. Part of the material was alsousedformyseminarnotesatPurdueUniversity,UniversityofMinnesota, andTexasA&MUniversity.Furthermore, thisbookwasthebasisforsummer schools on the ?nite element method and its applications held in China, Iran, Mexico, and Venezuela. This book covers six major topics and four applications. In Chap. 1, the 1 2 standard (H-and H -conforming) ?nite element method is introduced. In Chaps.2and3,twocloselyrelated?niteelementmethods,thenonconforming and the mixed ?nite element methods, are discussed. The discontinuous and characteristic?niteelementmethodsarestudiedinChaps.4and5;thesetwo methods have been recently developed. The adaptive ?nite element method is considered in Chap. 6. The last four chapters are devoted to applications of these methods to solid mechanics (Chap. 7), ?uid mechanics (Chap. 8), ?uid ?ow in porous media (Chap. 9), and semiconductor modeling (Chap. 10).

Since the early 70's, mixed finite elements have been the object of a wide and deep study by the mathematical and engineering communities. The fundamental role of this method for many application fields has been worldwide recognized and its use has been introduced in several commercial codes. An important feature of mixed finite elements is the interplay between theory and application. Discretization spaces for mixed schemes require suitable compatibilities, so that simple minded approximations generally do not work and the design of appropriate stabilizations gives rise to challenging mathematical problems. This volume collects the lecture notes of a C.I.M.E. course held in Summer 2006, when some of the most world recognized experts in the field reviewed the rigorous setting of mixed finite elements and revisited it after more than 30 years of practice. Applications, in this volume, range from traditional ones, like fluid-dynamics or elasticity, to more recent and active fields, like electromagnetism.

Combining theoretical insights with practical applications, this stimulating collection provides a state-of-the-art survey of the finite element method, one of the most powerful tools available for the solution of physical problems. Written by leading experts, this volume consider such topics as parabolic Galerkin methods, nonconforming elements, the treatment of singularities in elliptic boundary value problems, and conforming methods for self-adjount elliptic problems. This will be an invaluable basic reference for computational mathematicians and engineers who use finite element methods in academic or industrial research.
