Acid mine drainage refers to the outflow of acidic water from (usually abandoned) metal mines or coal mines. However, other areas where the earth has been disturbed (eg: construction sites, subdivisions, transportation corridors, etc.) may also contribute acid rock drainage to the environment. This book discusses the effectiveness and sustainability of active and passive systems for the treatment of acid mine drainage; acid mine drainage in the Portuguese Iberian pyrite belt; the geochemistry of acid mine drainage and it's environmental pollution problem; the status of acid mine drainage and metal leaching in Ghana; the disposal and beneficial use of acid mine drainage sludge and a host of other related topics.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: 1,0, , course: Montanuniversität Leoben, language: English, abstract: Water is a natural resource of high significance for human beings, fauna and flora. Therefore, the protection of water resources is one of the highest aims of each industrial site. The mining sector and its subsectors have a lot of applications for water, also causing a high potential to interfere with water systems. Mineral extraction, mineral resource storages, mineral processing and mine waste storage form important potential pollutant emitters. The weathering of sulphidic minerals cause the most severe mine-water-related problems, because it involves a decrease in the pH level as well as an increase in dissolved total solids, especially metal concentrations. This acid mine waters are categorized as acid mine drainage. The drainage of acidic water represents the biggest conflict between mining and environment in the world. This thesis deals with the characterization of waterbodies impacted by acid mine drainage. A discussion of the fundamental processes forms the basis of this paper. The classification of mine drainage, the weathering of pyrite and potential pollution sources are discussed in detail. However, impacts of acid mine drainage, drinking-water-specific values and legal and political aspects are mentioned as well. Based on this theoretical part, various international, especially European case studies will be reviewed. Each of these examples includes a brief introduction to the general mine-water related situation and with a focus on a specific development of the site, thus ensuring to illustrate the complexity of this environmental concern. Finally, a conclusion is drawn from the discussion of the case studies, complementing the theory part.

This book on the problem of acid waters in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (FPI) is structured in 7 chapters, including its most relevant conclusions at the end of each one. After the introduction, the basic notions about the processes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD) are described, necessary to understand the characteristics of this type of pollution (Chap. 2), which intensely affects river basins. Tinto and Odiel mainly due to mining from 1850 to the end of the 20th century (Chapters 3 and 4). The fifth chapter is dedicated to the impact on the reservoirs of the entire Spanish part of the FPI, whose acidity depends on the balance between acid inputs and the flow of waters not affected by AMD that they receive. The Tinto and Odiel rivers maintain their acid character until their mouth in the estuary of the Ría de Huelva, where a distribution of contaminants occurs between the water column and the sediment, which causes an impact on the biota of the transition waters ( Ch. 6). As a solution to the problem, the treatment techniques for these acid leachates from sulfide mining are presented, and strategies and measures that could be applied in the Odiel basin to improve its condition are recommended (Chap. 7).

Acidification is a universal problem at all mining sites in which oxygenated water comes in contact with sulfide minerals or other reduced sulfur compounds. An International Workshop was held in September 1995 at the Department for Inland Water Research of the UFZ-Centre for Environmental Research in Magdeburg on the limnology of lakes created by open-cast lignite mining, emphasizing the often observed geogenic acidification after oxidation of pyrite. The volume has 25 chapters including a chapter with results of group discussions about the topics mentioned above and further problems that were identified during the meeting. The monograph gives a baseline of the state of science on the worldwide problem of geogenic acidification of lakes following human mining activities.
