A growing use of membranes for construction purposes has recently been encouraged by their environmentally friendly characteristics. To offer a timely and extensive, research-grounded compendium on structures made with fabrics and foils, the most relevant facets of the state of the art are covered in two sister titles.Membranes for Structures — Applications is steeped in fascinating, functional examples: in fact, a selection of detailed case studies is presented in Part One, preceded by the description of two relevant historical antecedents, which are the circus tent and the "envelat". The particular case of the successful spoked wheel structural system for the construction of large stadiums is the subject of Part Two, including descriptions of four significant case studies. Two growing fields of application are the focus of Part Three, which is dedicated to façades that give buildings a unique appearance, and Part Five, which addresses replacements, renovations, and refurbishments—activities that are frequently encountered in today's construction industry. And Part Four presents the latest application developments in different countries across the globe, with achievements in China, Latin and North America, Japan, and Europe being highlighted. The well-amalgamated contributions, authored by international experts, produce a comprehensive reference to keep students and researchers as well as industry professionals and various other stakeholders abreast with the latest advancements. - Incorporates recent developments that are poorly documented in other literature available - Describes functional, structural, and decorative applications of membranes in buildings and includes various relevant case studies from around the world - Published alongside its sister title, Membranes for Structures — Fundamentals (ISBN: 9780443224072)

A growing use of membranes for construction purposes has recently been encouraged by their environmentally friendly characteristics. To offer a timely and extensive, research-grounded compendium on structures made with fabrics and foils, the most relevant facets of the state of the art are covered in two sister titles. After a moving remembrance of Marc Malinowski, a great promoter of membrane structures, Membranes for Structures — Fundamentals begins with a brief historical review of the development of design tools for membrane structures. Part One follows, discussing design fundamentals in the light of recent experiences and modern technologies. Part Two updates knowledge of products and materials, with a special focus on fire performance, the incorporation of photovoltaic cells, and ETFE. Part Three deals with other considerations related to design and installation, such as acoustic performance, post-failure stability, wind loads and lifecycle analysis, with special mentions of textile halls and biogas containers. A look into the future is proposed in Part Four, where some interesting, present-day research on ageing and applications is included. The well-amalgamated contributions, authored by international experts, produce a comprehensive reference to keep students and researchers as well as industry professionals and various other stakeholders abreast with the latest advancements. - Incorporates recent developments that are poorly documented in other literature available - Contains comprehensive information on form-finding and design with modern software, use of the latest materials and elements of support, and other valuable details for optimized construction - Published alongside its sister title, Membranes for Structures — Applications (ISBN: 9780443224058)

Membrane Structures written by Klaus-Michael Koch and has been published by Prestel Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Architecture categories.

In this comprehensive work to date on membrane technology for architecture, pioneers show how one of the world's oldest forms of building material is also its most innovative. Today, the cutting edge in architecture is not sharp but curved and undulating. It is also impermeable to moisture, resistant to extreme temperatures, flexible and portable. Known as the fifth building material after wood, stone, glass, and metal, membranes are popping up everywhere: in Olympic stadiums in Berlin and Atlanta, in airports from Denver to Bangkok, over fashion shows, formal gardens, and soccer fields. Membranes' ability to not only let in but also reflect light portends enormous possibilities for harnessing energy. This fascinating survey of membrane structures throughout the world discusses the history of the medium, describes the materials and their uses, explores the technology of membrane construction, and investigates numerous current and future projects. A final chapter offers a reasoned argument for further research and experimentation in this rapidly expanding field and a projection of its exciting future. Illustrated throughout

Bilayer Lipid Membranes Structure And Mechanical Properties written by Tibor Hianik and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-08-31 with Science categories.

In Bilayer Lipid Membranes. Structure and Mechanical Properties the authors use new methods of measurement, which they have themselves developed, to present an analysis of the relation between membrane structure and viscoelastic properties, in particular in the transversal direction. Hianik and Passechnik's approach is fundamentally different from the usual one, in that they analyze lipid bilayer dynamics during various modes of deformation, arriving at a new, `three-layer' model that accounts for the great heterogeneity of biomembranes. The macroscopic parameters of membranes have been measured using a wide variety of methods, leading to a discussion of the correlations between the parameters. There is also an extensive discussion of the dynamic changes in mechanical properties of lipid bilayers in the course of conformational transition of integral proteins. During the conformational changes of proteins, the structure of a bilayer undergoes a transition, reaching a new, stable membrane state. The book is the first to present a comprehensive analysis of long-distance interaction in lipid bilayers and of molecular mechanisms of mechanoreception. Audience: Scientists and graduate students working in biophysics, membranology, physiology, medicine, pharmacology, bioelectronics, electrochemistry, and colloid chemistry.

Perspectives In Civil Engineering written by Jeffrey S. Russell and has been published by ASCE Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-01-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This report contains 27 papers that serve as a testament to the state-of-the-art of civil engineering at the outset of the 21st century, as well as to commemorate the ASCE's Sesquicentennial. Written by the leading practitioners, educators, and researchers of civil engineering, each of these peer-reviewed papers explores a particular aspect of civil engineering knowledge and practice. Each paper explores the development of a particular civil engineering specialty, including milestones and future barriers, constraints, and opportunities. The papers celebrate the history, heritage, and accomplishments of the profession in all facets of practice, including construction facilities, special structures, engineering mechanics, surveying and mapping, irrigation and water quality, forensics, computing, materials, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, and transportation engineering. While each paper is unique, collectively they provide a snapshot of the profession while offering thoughtful predictions of likely developments in the years to come. Together the papers illuminate the mounting complexity facing civil engineering stemming from rapid growth in scientific knowledge, technological development, and human populations, especially in the last 50 years. An overarching theme is the need for systems-level approaches and consideration from undergraduate education through advanced engineering materials, processes, technologies, and design methods and tools. These papers speak to the need for civil engineers of all specialties to recognize and embrace the growing interconnectedness of the global infrastructure, economy, society, and the need to work for more sustainable, life-cycle-oriented solutions. While embracing the past and the present, the papers collected here clearly have an eye on the future needs of ASCE and the civil engineering profession.

The aim of this research is to investigate the innovative combination of water and membranes for temporary architectural applications. Water can be useful, as a construction material, for three different purposes. First of all, thanks to its thermal mass, it can be used as a medium for cooling down or heating up buildings; secondly, water is uncompressible and, in combination with air, it can be used as part of a structural elements; thirdly the mass of water could work as a sound barrier so it can be used as sound insulation material . The following pages will focus on the second and the third use of water in architectural applications. The research investigates innovative applications of water in architecture and for this reason an empirical approach was required. In fact, at present time, water is considered nor a structural neither an insulation material for architecture. For this reasons standard computation software can not deal with it. Thus, the research was based on the tests of two mock-ups. The first prototype concerns a 200 mm thick panel filled with water. The second prototype is a "waterbeam" of 2 m span, starting from the Tensairity(r) technology principle.
