The Intermediality Of Narrative Literature written by Jørgen Bruhn and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-29 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book argues that narrative literature very often, if not always, include significant amounts of what appears to be extra-literary material – in form and in content – and that we too often ignore this dimension of literature. It offers an up to date overview and discussion of intermedial theory, and it facilitates a much-needed dialogue between the burgeoning field of intermedial studies on the one side and the already well-developed methods of literary analysis on the other. The book aims at working these two fields together into a productive working method. It makes evident, in a methodologically succinct way, the necessity of approaching literature with an intermedial terminology by way of a relatively simple but never the less productive three-step analytic method. In four in-depth case studies of Anglophone texts ranging from Nabokov, Chandler and Tobias Wolff to Jennifer Egan, it demonstrates that medialities matter.

Swiss Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1.5 (Schweizer Skala: 5.5), University of Bern (English Department), language: English, abstract: W.G. Sebald and Jonathan Safran Foer stem from a different background in cultural, historical and local terms. Whereas Austerlitz is the last work of Sebald, which he finished shortly before his unexpected death, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is only Foer's second novel, finished at the age of 27. However, both novels do not only both circle the subjects of trauma through war, the loss of parents by the hand of the enemy and the impact of memory. They also both use graphic representations as an autonomous layer in their narratives. These graphic representations - photographs, maps, drawings, flip-book collections, etc. - are generally used in various ways to visualize meaning. The main protagonists, Austerlitz and Oskar, serve as both the collectors and creators of these representations within the narratives. As different as they are, both Austerlitz and Oskar, as well as Oskar's grandparents, have suffered traumatic experiences by war and the loss of loved ones. The pictures that have been integrated in the narratives execute various functions on different levels along the way of their stories. On the intrafictional level, they act as visualizations of pain and trauma, proofs of existence and identity, evidence of history, media of documentation and verification, surrogates of experience and means of expression. On the extrafictional level, they serve not only as a means to carry on with the narrative on a visual level, but also as a reminder that pictures are always open to numerous interpretations and do not necessarily contribute to authentication, realization and truth as they are often perceived to do in everyday life. Rather, they give way to fictionalization, and to the construction of one's very own version of an explanation, which can

Artistic creativity is fuelled by the permanent interaction among artistic forms, cultures, societies, and eventually different individuals, in the form of an all-inclusive intertextuality. The dialogues between the past and the present help the artist examine his own art, making him conscious of his position in the field, whether through self-evaluation, renewal or experiment with new textualities. This book explores how the strategies reflecting the exchanges between past and present modes of artistic production become active agents of intervention in creating the various spaces of dialogue and confrontation when establishing the identities and cultural specificity of a certain society or community.

Not So Innocent Abroad written by Ulrike Brisson and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Literary Criticism categories.

With its specific focus on the connections between politics, travel, and travel writing, Not So Innocent Abroad offers a fresh approach to the study of travel literature. The authors make clear that travel and travel writing are never an â oeinnocentâ enterprise; rather, journeying always occurs within political systems, and travel writing either reflects the travelerâ (TM)s political stance, includes political aspects of foreign cultures, or directly or indirectly influences political decisions. In contrast to most scholarly publications that primarily focus on travel literature of former colonial nations, this volume includes a broader range of travelogues depicting cultures worldwide, spanning from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century. It thus offers with its comparative approach not only a geographically wide selection but also an historical dimension to the political aspects of travel writing. Although most travel literature generally has followed the Horatian principle to instruct and delight the armchair traveler, the authors of this volume clearly address the broader political implications of travel and travel writing within networks of â oenakedâ politics, such as international or interior conflicts, emigration laws, or national propaganda. They also reveal how insidiously political messages are dissimulated through travel writing.

For many weeks, the terrorist attacks of 9/11 dominated the newspapers which covered the consequences with an unprecedented immediateness. This study looks at diverging representations of 9/11 in U.S. and German newspapers (New York Times, Washington Post, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung) and explores effects on its possible readerships. The impact of the attacks, forms of heroism, the enactment of leadership, various demonstrations of patriotism and grief as well as the textual and visual presentation of the attacks are analyzed in detail. These intermedial representations reaffirm or contest U.S. American grand narratives. While the German newspapers tend to focus on information and analysis, the U.S. papers tend to strengthen shattered U.S. American identity constructions. The study is based on nearly 2,000 newspaper articles and documents the wide scope of topics prevalent in the post-9/11 newspaper coverage.

Media are an inescapable part of collectively shared realities, shaping our daily lives in complex and frequently unintelligible ways. In the wake of recent changes in the field of American Studies, questions of medium and mediality have become a central venue for interdisciplinary research and intradisciplinary self-examination. This volume collects twenty-three essays first presented at the 53rd conference of the German Association of American Studies. All of the essays are concerned in one way or another with the aesthetics and materiality of media. They cover a variety of topics ranging from the intermediality of American literature and the visual mediality of film and photography to the role of media in American politics and the impact of the internet. The volume is divided into five segments: The Book as Medium and the Mediality of Literature; Visual Culture; Intermediality: Image - Music - Text; Politics and the Public Sphere; The Didactics of Media Studies.
