This edited volume covers the multiple changes concerning urban governance in the course of the progressive transformation of the Pearl River Delta mega-urban region in China. Looking at the megacities Guangzhou and Shenzhen, it analyzes the maturing of socio-economic, political and spatial structures after the first waves of economic globalization, political transformation, and their rapid expansion and urbanization. The initial claim and starting point of the book is the existence of a profound multidimensional shift in the coastal mega-urban region with a major tendency towards urban upgrading, economic restructuring and a clearly observable consolidation of political institutions. For the first time since the beginning of the reform and opening up after 1978, this has led to a stronger bias toward urban regeneration, an adaptive re-use of the building stock and an establishment of post-industrial knowledge-based creative industries. The book investigates these changes as a set of mutually dependent developments that have to be understood and analyzed in connection with one another. Thus, the backgrounds and underlying forces that shape physical restructuring in the developed urban cores of the mega-urban region and the ways in which the relevant actors and institutions are trying to both cope with and to influence each other are introduced here.

Population aging often provokes fears of impending social security deficits, uncontrollable medical expenditures, and transformations in living arrangements, but public policy could also stimulate social innovations. These issues are typically studied at the national level; yet they must be resolved where most people live--in diverse neighborhoods in cities. New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo are the four largest cities among the wealthiest, most developed nations of the world. The essays commissioned for this volume compare what it is like to grow older in these cities with respect to health care, quality of life, housing, and long-term care. The contributors look beyond aggregate national data to highlight the importance of how local authorities implement policies.

Volume II: MEGA-CITIES Mega-Cities presents an in-depth analysis of ten cities, prepared by noted scholars who have lived and studied in the cities under scrutiny. This volume covers the role giant cities play in their regions, successes and failures of their public policy, and their most pressing political and environmental problems. "Unlike Volume I, Volume II presents a comparative problems-oriented description of urbanization using ten of the largest cities in the world. This is a wonderful compliment to the first volume in which conceptual frameworks of urbanization were utilized in describing the urban dynamics of specific cities. In again selecting studies by leading scholars of cities representative of all the world′s regions, the editors have produced in both volumes a remarkably successful comparative analysis of world urbanization. . . . Without question, the editors have contributed enormously to the literature on comparative world urbanization, an area in which there is still much to do. . . . This volume and its companion are invaluable resources and inspirations to all those who have an interest in the urban dynamics in this rapidly changing world. Cross cultural analysis is no easy accomplishment, but the editors and the authors have done it successfully and the community of urban scholars is indebted to them." --Journal of Developing Societies

* Updated and much expanded edition of the authors' 1992 classic Environmental Problems in Third World Cities * Comprehensive account of the health- and life- threatening environmental conditions in which a growing proportion of the world's people live * Ideal as a textbook and for professionals and interested general readers * 1st edition widely adopted on urban geography, development studies, environmental courses Most of the world's urban population and most of the large and rapidly growing cities are in developing countries. Often poorly governed, their conditions produce millions of preventable deaths and extensive disease. This book describes these cities' environmental problems and how they affect health, local ecosystems and global cycles. It analyzes the causes: the failure of governments to supply clean water and implement existing measures, or land-owning structures that marginalize the poor. It also highlights the innovative ways in which problems are being tackled, showing solutions are available and the action needed by cities, local governments and community organizations.
