Management control systems have frequently been seen as irrelevant to strategy, or even damaging. "Controlling Strategy" draws out the various ways in which management control systems can build and sustain valuable strategic roles. The book explores topics such as: Strategic measurement; Strategic data analysis; The Balanced Scorecard; Capital budgeting; and Strategy coordination. Written as an introduction to the strategic role of management control systems "Controlling Strategy" provides a synthesis of important work in the fields of strategy and management accounting. Academics and Advanced Students of Accounting, Strategy, or Management Studies will find the book an indispensable guide to this area.

Strategy according to Percy Barnevik, Chairman of ABB is 10 per cent vision and 90 per cent execution. Yet standard textbooks of strategic management are decidedly light in terms of their treatment of the organisational issues which frequently derail change initiatives. This text on the implementation of strategy redresses the balance.

Staying Power Six Enduring Principles For Managing Strategy And Innovation In An Uncertain World Lessons From Microsoft Apple Intel Google Toyota And More written by Michael A. Cusumano and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-16 with Business & Economics categories.

As we move into an era of simultaneous innovation and commoditization, enabled by digital technologies, managers around the world are asking themselves "how can we both adapt to rapid changes in technology and markets, and still make enough money to survive - and thrive?" To provide answers to these important and urgent questions, MIT Sloan School of Management Professor Michael Cusumano draws on nearly 30 years of research into the practices of global corporations that have been acknowledged leaders and benchmark setters - and Microsoft, Apple, Intel, Google, and others in software, internet services, and consumer electronics, and Toyota in manufacturing. If we look deeply enough, he contends, we can see the ideas that underpin the management practices that make for great companies, and drive their strategic evolution and innovation capabilities. From his deep knowledge of these organizations, Cusumano distils six enduring principles that he believes have been - in various combinations - crucial to their strategy, innovation management practices, and ability to deal with change and uncertainty. The first two principles - platforms (not just products), and services, for product firms - are relatively new and broader ways of thinking about strategy and business models, based on Cusumano's latest research. The other four - capabilities (not just strategy), the "pull" concept, economies of scope, and flexibility (not just efficiency) - all contribute to agility, which is a mix of flexibility and speed. Some practices associated with these ideas, such as dynamic capabilities, just-in-time production, iterative or prototype-driven product development, flexible design and manufacturing, modular architectures, and component reuse, are now commonly regarded as standard best practices. They are also essential to a new world dominated by platforms and technology-enabled services.

Project success is an elusive goal in every business or technical domain. Project failure usually results from unhandled risks to the technical, cost, and schedule aspects of the project. There are four primary root causes of project failure. Unrealistic performance expectation, with missing Measures of Effectiveness Unrealistic cost and schedule estimates based on inadequate risk adjusted growth models Inadequate assessment of risk and unmitigated exposure to these risks without proper handling strategies Unanticipated technical issues with alternative plans and solutions to maintain the effectiveness of the project processes and its deliverables Risk Management provides a comprehensive overview of the people, principles, processes, and practices as the fundamental base upon which an effective risk management system resides. However, this does not guarantee effective risk management and successful projects and businesses. The first half of the book describes risk management processes, as well as a delineation between risk and hazards and how these are connected. The second half of the book provides industry examples of the approach to risk management in specific context and with specific approaches and artifacts where applicable. The book focuses on risks created by uncertainty, their identification, and the corrective and preventive actions needed to address these risks to increase the probability of project success. The book’s goal is to provide a context-driven framework, developing a foundation for a rational approach to risk management that makes adaptation to circumstances as easy as possible.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, Comenius University in Bratislava (Department of Management), course: Corporate Management, language: English, abstract: KAPLAN/NORTON suggested an enlargement or change of the BSC perspectives to be able to adjust the scorecard system to the individual situation of each company. They were aware that their four classic perspectives were not the central dimensions for every time, but need to be adjusted, when the economic environment of a company changes. Exactly such a change happened, when the digital economy appeared. That is a main reason, why a new perspective is important to consider the e-business strategy. In practice most of the SME use only the four basic perspectives that are described in the fundamental literature. They do neither dare to create alterations of the perspectives nor to change or modify the shown procedure. These companies need a support, how to add the e-business perspective to consider the digital economy. For this reason it is necessary to give stimulation to the business practice, how to handle goals, structures and initiatives of such a new perspective. There is a permanently increasing supply of hardware and software solutions to support or partly take over the processes of the company. The balanced scorecard respects soft facts in its calculations. In the digital economy these soft facts become more and more important. In former times the managing directors of SME often ignored the knock-on effect of soft facts. They orientated mainly about financial figures. But the digital economy has to consider different strategies. Some statistics depict that even up to 80% of a company's profits in the digital economy depend on soft facts. Managers have to learn dealing with soft facts and intrinsic values. As DRUCKER says, the experience of every employee can be used as a source of value added. An employ
