This book outlines how to identify stakeholders, analyse theirs stakes, and plan and implement an engagement strategy to secure relevant input and dependable buy-in to assure the successful delivery of Large Infrastructure Projects. It also addresses common stakeholder management "inadequacies" and is supplemented with four extended practical exercises to help readers apply the principles to their own large, complex projects and ensure project success. The project management industry, particularly the Large Infrastructure Projects domain, has only recently awakened to the reality that failed Stakeholder Management probably leads to a failure of the project altogether. Due to the complexities involved, most traditional approaches to managing stakeholders have developed serious difficulties in dealing with large and complex projects. This book presents a Systems Thinking approach to managing stakeholders that accommodates these complexities and seeks to crystallise the notion that "managing projects means managing stakeholders", while also introducing an ethical perspective (i.e., stakeholders have legitimate rights regardless of their power to influence the project). This shifts the paradigm from "Management of Stakeholders" to "Management for Stakeholders". It is essential reading for all those involved with managing large projects including project managers, sponsors, and executives. It will also be useful for advanced students of project management and systems engineering looking to understand and expand their knowledge of infrastructure projects and Systems Engineering.

Carrying out a project as planned is not a guarantee for success. Projects may fail because project management does not take the requirements, wishes and concerns of stakeholders sufficiently into account. Projects can only be successful through contributions from stakeholders. And it is the stakeholders that evaluate whether they find the project successful - an evaluation based on criteria that go beyond receiving the project deliverables. More often than not, the criteria are implicit and change during the project course. This is an enormous challenge for project managers. The route to better projects, say Pernille Eskerod and Anna Lund Jepsen, lies in finding ways to improve project stakeholder management. To manage stakeholders effectively, you need to know your stakeholders, their behaviours and attitudes towards the project. The authors give guidance on how to adopt an analytical and structured approach; how to document, store and retrieve your knowledge; how to plan your stakeholder interactions in advance; and how to make your plans explicit, at the very least internally. A well-conceived plan can prevent you from being carried away in the ’heat of the moment’ and help you spend your limited resources for stakeholder management in the best way. To make this plan, you need to agree on the objectives of your stakeholder strategy and ways to achieve them. Project Stakeholder Management offers tactics and tools founded on established marketing communications theory as well as strategic management for doing just that. This book is part of Gower’s Fundamentals of Project Management Series.

Your stakeholders-individuals with a vested interest in your project's results-might not be present in your day-to-day work. But since they ultimately impact your project's outcomes, knowing how to define who your stakeholders are and what they need is integral to your success as a project manager. In this course, learn how to identify stakeholder needs and expectations, both explicit and implicit, and build and sustain stakeholder engagement. Natasha Kasimtseva begins by detailing the measurable benefits related to successful stakeholder management. She then explains how to iteratively identify your own stakeholders; analyze and evaluate stakeholders using both emotional intelligence and data representation tools; and engage in service-based thinking as a leader.

Stakeholder management is one of the most important aspects of project management and essentially determines the success or failure of a project, even if it happens to be otherwise well-managed. Realizing this important aspect of project management, Project Management Institute added a tenth Knowledge Area -- Project Stakeholder Management -- to A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) - fifth edition. In large infrastructure, manufacturing, construction, or any other type of project of similar size and complexity sponsored by government, private entrepreneurs, or an international body, there are many stakeholders external to the project and project developing company who experience potential impact to their socioeconomic and environmental fabric. A substantial number of stakeholders will develop a negative attitude for various reasons. A segmental analysis, by categorizing such stakeholders and mapping their behavioral patterns, leads to development of a more effective and quick stakeholder management plan to deal with such stakeholders and win their support. This article discusses such a step-by-step strategy, which is aligned with the PMBOK® Guide - fifth edition, and outlines certain recommendations in developing a stakeholder management plan with the above objective.
