Start out on the fast track to corporate success by mastering the skills used by experienced, high-achieving managers. Get answers to those day-to-day questions that confront supervisors in companies large or small. Do budgeting and tracking (graphs and charts illustrate common financial mistakes); interview and select job candidates wisely; promote and appraise employees fairly; and prepare for the difficult task of firing someone. Understand networking in all its facets: mentoring, establishing connections both inside and outside of the job, and ethics. Because so much business communication takes place through letters, memos, and contracts, managers require a thorough knowledge of writing. Always keep in mind that a written document is permanent--errors can come back to haunt you. Remember that most business people are busy, so forego lengthy reports for something concise and clear. In no time, you'll be managing your job-and your career-with maximum effectiveness! Originally published as Managing Effectively. Sterling 192 pages, 6 x 9.

Managing Effectively demonstrates how you can develop yourself through the actual experience of managing, more specifically how you can use your practical experience as a self-contained means to personal development without having to go on a course; how projects can develop your competence in both leadership and management; how dealing with your organization's politics and collaborating across boundaries can develop your personal power; and how managing external action and your thought processes can be brought together in an integrated, holistic way. The book is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge and understanding required for any competency-based management course. It is based on the Management Charter Initiative's Occupational Standards for Management NVQs and SVQs at Level 5. It is particularly suitable also for managers on Diploma in Management programmes, including those accredited by BTEC.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3 (76), University of Hertfordshire, course: Managing across cultures, language: English, abstract: Increasing globalisation offers a wide range of opportunities for businesses operating in an international market, and managers are required more than ever before to work with individuals from different countries (Sparrow et al., 2004). However, in order to manage effectively across national borders and to prevent misunderstandings or conflicts, it is imperative for international managers to understand the complex differences between countries and their implications for business. Against this background, it is particularly worthwhile to scrutinise existing research concerned with the current challenges faced by multinational corporations (MNCs) more closely. Accordingly, the aim of the present essay is to critically evaluate the research paper “Managing talent across national borders: the challenges faced by an international retail group” by Mehdi Boussebaa and Glenn Morgan (2008) and to provide implications for theory and practice in cross-cultural management. First of all, to set the stage for the article analysis, a brief overview of the paper will be provided. Subsequently, theoretical frameworks used in the article will be presented and evaluated. This is followed by a critical evaluation of the appropriateness of the chosen study design and methodology for the research questions posed by the authors. Further, the findings and conclusions of the undertaken study will be outlined and discussed, and afterwards, based on the critical analysis of the paper in the previous sections, the implications for individuals involved in cross-cultural management will be presented. Finally, the essay will conclude that the reviewed research paper, despite some flaws, is an interesting piece of work that makes a contribution to the existing research on international management.
