Making Political Science Matter brings together a number of prominent scholars to discuss the state of the field of Political Science. In particular, these scholars are interested in ways to reinvigorate the discipline by connecting it to present day political struggles. Uniformly well-written and steeped in a strong sense of history, the contributors consider such important topics as: the usefulness of rational choice theory; the ethical limits of pluralism; the use (and misuse) of empirical research in political science; the present-day divorce between political theory and empirical science; the connection between political science scholarship and political struggles, and the future of the discipline. This volume builds on the debate in the discipline over the significance of the work of Bent Flyvbjerg, whose book Making Social Science Matter has been characterized as a manifesto for the Perestroika Movement that has roiled the field in recent years. Contributors include: Brian Caterino, Stewart Clegg, Bent Flyvbjerg, Mary Hawkesworth, Patrick Thaddeus Jackson, Gregory J. Kasza, David Kettler, David D. Laitin, Timothy W. Luke, Theodore R. Schatzki, Sanford F. Schram, Peregrine Schwartz-Shea, Corey S. Shdaimah, Roland W. Stahl, and Leslie Paul Thiele.

Still, they reaffirm that community organizing has an important role to play as part of a broader progressive movement.

"This is a book about the necessities and possibilities of innovations in the social sciences in order to realize societal changes. The natural sciences became the dominant model for the social sciences, resulting in positivism as ideology and in the organizational structuring of the social sciences into disciplines. In order to overcome the problems of scientism, a shift to a radical new ontological framework is necessary. In parallel, it is necessary to introduce participative research designs, move concepts and theories from one discipline to another and focus upon developing worldviews. Innovations in the social sciences are possible and necessary. But for these to happen, new societal pressures and demands will have to be present. Changing the social sciences is not a voluntary process that can be undertaken by social scientists alone." (Publisher's website)

Research is the systematic process of planning, investigating, and understanding a phenomenon in order to find answers to specific questions. This book describes and explains the essential foundations of the research process in the social sciences. It is guided by the notion that there is no such thing as one general "best" method, but that the choice of method depends upon the research problem and the purpose of the research. Key features of the book include: -- setting the stage from a philosophy of science perspective that emphasizes the need to choose the appropriate frame of reference for a given research problem -- describing the mindset that is necessary to work in a scientific way and the rules that apply, regardless of whether the researcher is a first year student or writing a Ph.D -- explaining the importance of theories, models, and methods for a systematic approach to literature reviews, use of secondary data, and empirical investigations -- introducing the fundamental characteristics of qualitative and quantitative methods and their implications for data collection and analysis -- clarifying the issues of verification and reflection in the evaluation of research studies

Discourse analysis revealed that although both groups distanced their own perspectives from those of an imagined mass audience, they did so in disparate ways. Unlike students, activists played games of interpretation such as role-playing, inventing dialogue, and using conditional clauses contrary to fact ("If ..."). They contrasted their own critical activity with the passive susceptibility they perceived in other people who were not engaged in a counter-public sphere.
