More than twenty-five years after Vatican II, religious congregations of North America continue to struggle with their lifestyle and with their formation programs. What is the most appropriate formation for those who are entering religious life? Spurred on by the need to examine this question in the light of her own experience as a novice director, Mary Kay Kinberger explores the importance of grounding religious formation in a theological foundation and proposes Bernard Lonergan's theology of conversion as one possible foundation. This text is essential reading for those who are involved in the challenge of living as religious today and committed to preparing the religious to move into the future.

The process of human transformation is complex and ongoing. This book presents a framework for understanding human transformation through the insights of Bernard Lonergan. The reader will be introduced to terms such as the turn to the subject, consciousness, subjectivity, and intersubjectivity. It will explore terms such as horizon, feelings, values, self-esteem, sublation, conversion, dialectic, and religious experience. The book explores transformation through the way mentors have authored their own lives, told their own stories, and taken possession of their interiority. Transformation is illustrated through the lives of saints and ordinary men and women who did extraordinary things, such as St. Augustine, Dag Hammarskjold, Vaclav Havel, Franz Jaggerstatter, St. Therese of Lisieux, Fredrich Nietzsche, Katherine Ann Power, and Marie Cardinal. Transformation is also illustrated through the medium of cinema: Babette's Feast, The Mission, As It is in Heaven, Romero, Dead Poets Society, Ordinary People, The Godfather trilogy, Three Color trilogy, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Dial M for Murder, and Twelve Angry Men. While the book treats religious, moral, affective, intellectual, and psychic conversion as moments of transformation, it argues that ecological conversion requires all of these so as to meet the most serious moral challenge of our time.

Bernard Lonergan, SJ, (1904-1984) was one of the most original and important Catholic theologians writing in English. His work in the main is directed to the difficult area of the foundations of theology. Combining the insight of St. Thomas and Kant, he has been hailed as the pioneer of a new way forward and criticized for constructing a labyrinth from which there is no exit. 'Looking at Lonergan's Method' is a collection of essays by theologians, philosophers, and scientists, Catholic and Protestant, English-speaking and continental, who offer their assessment of Lonergan's important work, 'Method in Theology.' 'Looking at Lonergan's Method' is a sequel to a conference held at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland, in the spring of 1973.

Twenty years after the fall of Communism in Central and East Europe is an ocassion to reevaluate the cultural and theological contribution from that region to the secularization - post-secularization debate. Czech theologian Ivana Noble develops a Trinitarian theology through a close dialogue with literature, music and film, which formed not only alternatives to totalitarian ideologies, but also followed the loss and reappeareance of belief in God. Noble explains that, by listening to the artists, the churches and theologians can deal with questions about the nature of the world, memory and ultimate fulfilment in a more nuanced way. Then, as partakers in the search undertaken by their secular and post-secular contemporaries, theologians can penetrate a new depth of meaning, sending out shoots from the stump of Christian symbolism. Drawing on the rich cultures of Central and East Europe and both Western and Eastern theological traditions, this book presents a theological reading of contemporary culture which is important not just for post-Communist countries but for all who are engaged in the debate on the boundaries between theology, politics and arts.
