Throughout the world, river conservation is becoming an increasingly important concern. In arid regions, for instance, rivers often form the only water resource for human sustenance: indeed, the World Bank has predicted that future wars will be about water. In many parts of the developing world, rivers are used as repositories for waste, and river ecosystems consequently reflect the worst excesses of human exploitation. In the industrialised nations, the focus of attention is beginning to move from chemical clean-up to restoring the structural damage to rivers caused by decades of river engineering. Recognition is growing that river management needs a catchment-wide perspective if the needs of human populations, river habitats and wildlife are to reach a sustainable balance. The development of river conservation strategies has become a global imperative. Global Perspectives on River Conservation is the first book that provides a truly global synthesis of knowledge on river conservation, with the aim of encouraging strategic river planning. It does this in two ways. First, it sets out a worldwide, region-by-region overview of the science, policy and practice of river conservation. Second, it provides a topical review of different river settings (such as tropical/temperate; temporary/perennial; large/small) and contemporary issues in river conservation (such as classification and evaluation; environmental legislation; the role of public participation). Global Perspectives on River Conservation is an invaluable reference for river managers, planners and developers, conservationists, statutory water agencies, government departments, academics, researchers, postgraduates and final-year under-graduates working in the field of environmental management of inland waters.

The second edition of this compelling and popular book offers a unique global perspective on children’s lives throughout the world. It shows how the notion of childhood is being radically re-shaped, in part as a consequence of globalization. Taking an engaging historical and comparative approach, the book explores social issues such as how children are constituted as raced, classed and gendered subjects; how children’s involvement in war is connected to the globalization of capitalism and organized crime; and how school and work operate as sites for the governing of childhood. The book discusses wide-ranging topics including children’s rights, the family, children and war, child labour and young people’s activism around the globe. In addition to updated literature throughout, the revised edition includes new chapters on migration and trafficking, and the role of play. The book will continue to be of great value to students and scholars in the fields of sociology, geography, social policy and development studies. It will also be a valuable companion to practitioners of international development and social work, as well as to anyone interested in childhood in the contemporary world.

Women and resistance in Iran; cowboy songs; fetal alcohol syndrome; the conquest of Everest; women settlers in Natal. What do these topics have in common? The study of what used to be called Commonwealth literature, or the new literatures, has by now come to be known as postcolonial study. This collection of essays investigates the status of postcolonial studies today. The contributors come from three generations: the pioneers who introduced study of the “new” literatures into university English departments, the next generation who refined and developed many of the theoretical positions embodied in postcolonial study, and the next, much younger, generation, who use the established practices of the discipline to investigate the application of this theory in a wide range of cultural contexts. Although the authors write from such different starting points, a surprisingly similar set of images, phrases and topics of concern emerge in their essays. They return constantly to issues of difference and similarity, the re-examination of categories that often appear to be too rigidly defined in current postcolonial practices, and to concepts of sharing: experience, ideas of home, and even the use of land. Postcolonizing the Commonwealth: Studies in Literature and Culture offers an intriguing analysis of the state of postcolonial criticism today and of the application of postcolonial methods to a variety of texts and historical events. It is an invaluable contribution to the current debate in both literary and cultural studies.

The world of public policy is becoming increasingly small due to dramatic changes in global communications, political and economic institutional structures, and to nation states themselves. This book evaluates the implications of these changes and challenges for both the study and the practice of policy transfer, and provides a unique understanding of the relationship between systemic globalizing forces and the increasing scope and intensity of policy transfer activity. It provides: an explanation of policy transfer as a process of organizational learning; an insight into how and why such processes are studied by policy scientists; an evaluation of its use by policy practitioners; and the first published collection of policy transfer case studies between developed countries, from developed to developing countries, and from developing countries.

Perspectives On English As A World Language written by D. J. Allerton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with English language categories.
English, originally just the language of England, has become the most international of all languages. Along with this expansion has come diversification of its forms and functions, as well as rivalry with other languages. In this volume an attempt is made to present a cross-section of case studies of English as it is used in different parts of the world, showing how varieties of the language differ and under what conditions they are used. The book is aimed at students and general readers as much as specialists, so that its range has been kept within modest proportions; nevertheless it encompasses selected aspects of the types of English found in Scotland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Africa, France and Switzerland. In addition, there are papers on the more general issues of learner English, dictionaries for non-major varieties of English, Ogden ́s Basic English, and cultural and ideological aspects of English as a world language. The editors believe they have put together a stimulating and informative introduction to this fascinating and rapidly developing field.
