The future of education centers empowered students in a global learning ecosystem. Despite decades of reform, the traditional borders of education—graduation, curriculum, classrooms, schools—have failed to deliver on the goals of excellence and equity. Despite massive societal changes, education remains controlled by an old mindset. It is time to change that limiting mindset and, more importantly, the ineffective practices in education. To truly serve all learners, future classrooms must remove the boundaries of learning and become student-centered, culturally responsive, and personalized—supportive and equitable environments where each student can direct their own learning and seek multiple pathways to skills and knowledge in a global learning ecosystem. This compelling call for transformative change offers all involved in education Evidence-based arguments that reveal the need to break the traditional borders that limit learning Strategies to personalize learning and remove the confinement of traditional pathways Examples from around the world to create equitable and student-centric learning environments Resources for creating a school learning environment that expands opportunities for personalized learning into the global learning ecosystem It is time to now imagine a different kind of learning, without borders, and to begin the shifts in practice that will result in personalized learning for all students.

Archaeology without Borders presents new research by leading U.S. and Mexican scholars and explores the impacts on archaeology of the border between the United States and Mexico. Including data previously not readily available to English-speaking readers, the twenty-four essays discuss early agricultural adaptations in the region and groundbreaking archaeological research on social identity and cultural landscapes, as well as economic and social interactions within the area now encompassed by northern Mexico and the U.S. Southwest. Contributors examining early agriculture offer models for understanding the transition to agriculture, explore relationships between the spread of agriculture and Uto-Aztecan migrations, and present data from Arizona, New Mexico, and Chihuahua. Contributors focusing on social identity discuss migration, enculturation, social boundaries, and ethnic identities. They draw on case studies that include diverse artifact classes - rock art, lithics, architecture, murals, ceramics, cordage, sandals, baskets, faunal remains, and oral histories. Mexican scholars present data from Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Michoacan, Coahuila, and Nuevo Leon. They address topics including Spanish-indigenous conflicts, archaeological history, cultural landscapes, and interactions among Mesoamerica, northern Mexico, and the U.S. Southwest. Laurie D. Webster is a visiting scholar in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Arizona. Maxine E. McBrinn is a postdoctoral research scientist at the Field Museum in Chicago. Proceedings of the 2004 Southwest Symposium. Contributors include Karen R. Adams, M. Nicolás Caretta, Patricia Carot, John Carpenter, Jeffery Clark, Linda S. Cordell, William E. Doolittle, Suzanne L. Knowledge and learning are becoming increasingly central to work and everyday life at the close of the 20th century. This document examines the potential for creating a new match between the demand for and the supply of new forms of learning. It draws on a range of recent Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) work and summarizes the perspectives that emerged from the CERI conference, "Learning Beyond Schooling: New Forms of Supply and New Demands," held in Paris in December 1994. Chapter 1 looks at new demands for learning and new forms of supply, considering how they might be better matched. Chapter 2 looks more specifically at aspects of the new "learning infrastructure" that might enhance learning opportunities. The third chapter examines a number of policy issues, including the question of how responsibilities should be divided between public and private actors. The report concludes that it is not inevitable that new learning opportunities develop in ways that best match demand. Governments in partnership, particularly with the private sector, will need to play an important role in creating a sound infrastructure for learning, although they may not always be directly involved as suppliers. Conclusions for policymakers to consider include: (1) learning in the 21st century will become an essential part of everyday human activity; (2) access to learning in the 21st century must strive for universality; (3) learning technologies in the 21st century must actively support respond flexibly to learner needs; (4) learning suppliers in the 21st century must adapt their ways; (5) governments in the 21st century must actively support the learning infrastructure, but not expect to control the agenda; and (6) learning in the 21st century will need to be a collaborative enterprise. Appendices contain descriptions of three CERI studies and the conference program. (LMI)
