Modern organizational life seems dominated by crisis BP and the Gulf Oil spill, TEPCO and the Japanese tsunami, the global financial meltdown. Therefore it is particularly timely to find a collection of articles in this Handbook that provides research guidance and practical insights on how leaders manage or mismanage in crisis situations. The focus on the crisis leader highlights what they do, and how they do it, while at the same time raising important questions to guide subsequent analysis. Sydney Finkelstein, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth, US and author of Why Smart Executives Fail With contributions from many of the leading researchers in the field, the Handbook of Research on Crisis Leadership in Organizations summarizes much of the theory, research, and opinion about various facets of crisis leadership in order to advance this emerging field. It recognizes that crises have become an almost inevitable part of organizational life, and describes how leaders can facilitate people getting through the crisis. The Handbook is divided into four parts: attributes and behaviors of the crisis leader; leadership of subordinates during a crisis; managing the present crisis and prevent future crises; and an integration of approaches to understanding crisis leadership. Enough knowledge has been accumulated about crisis leadership in organizations to serve as guidelines for practice, as well as a research base to build on for the future. Leaders must help others get through crises as well as prevent them. Researchers in the field of crisis leadership and crisis management will find this important resource invaluable. Academics and students of organizational behavior, industrial and organizational psychology, and management will also find much of interest and might also suggest the book as a valuable addition to their library as an important resource in the field of crisis leadership. Human resource professionals in larger organizations as well as management consultants who endeavor to acquire advanced knowledge about this field will find the practical aspects of keen interest as well.

Leadership is the most important aspect of an organizations success. Leaders lead their teams daily. They communicate the vision, over and over, and point to milestone achievements as well as small wins. They establish the culture, and build a team that supports and protects every aspect of that culture. This is expected from leadership during good times, when things are being executed and success is evident. But what happens when a crisis occurs? Organizations struggle while some even fall apart. I have heard it stated that organizations with poor leadership fail quickly during adversity. Some may make it through, however, many will fail. Strong leadership works during the good times to build a foundation for when a crisis occurs. Remember, a crisis may occur at no fault of the organization. Crisis can be driven internally, as well as externally. But how an organization is prepared, and how they respond, can determine not only their survival, but also their success. There are 3-Stages of Leadership Crisis Management, but unfortunately, when a crisis happens, which is Stage #2, most organizations never considered Stage #1 execution, or just gave small consideration to its importance. Therefore, they already start the crisis from behind, with no foundation, and they are in a scramble. This disarray filters into the organizations next moves where they make decisions on the fly, and therefore display poor execution. The organization then goes through different levels of execution plans, which drives a lack of confidence from all staff. It is our responsibility as leaders to lead, follow, or get out of the way. We must build other leaders to fulfill our vision and drive our culture. We must instill confidence while driving towards success with the belief and ownership from our teams, in which they accept and assume accountability and responsibility. Leadership is influence, as stated by John Maxwell. Leaders build their teams around the influence that followers believe in, and hunger for. Create a team that will not only survive but flourish as the crisis sunsets.

"Nothing tests a leader like a crisis. The highly charged, dramatic events surrounding a crisis profoundly affect the people in an organization and can even threaten the organization's survival. But there are actions a leader can take before, during, and after a crisis to effectively reduce the duration and impact of these extremely difficult situations. At its center, effective crisis leadership is comprised of three things - communication, clarity of vision and values, and caring relationships. Leaders who develop, pay attention to, and practice these qualities go a long way toward handling the human dimension of a crisis. In the end, it's all about the people."

This book is about how leaders and the organizations they lead can maintain reputation, trust, confidence, financial and operational strength, and competitive advantage in a crisis. First, by thinking clearly; second by making smart choices; and third by executing those choices effectively. But making smart choices in a crisis can be agonizing. The difference between leaders who handle crises well and those who handle crises poorly is mental readiness: the ability some leaders exhibit that allows them to make smart choices quickly in a crisis. And this ability creates real competitive advantage. One of the predictable patterns of crisis response is that the severity of the crisis event does not determine whether an organization and its leader get through a crisis effectively. Indeed, two organizations, similarly situated, can see dramatically different outcomes based on the quality and timeliness of their individual responses to the crisis events. And the ability to respond effectively in a timely way is a consequence of mental readiness. This book is for leaders of organizations who need to be good stewards of reputation, trust, and confidence; and for those who advise those leaders, whether in public relations, or law, or other business disciplines. Author Helio Fred Garcia harvests insights from more than 30 years of working on, studying, and teaching about thousands of crises affecting companies, governments, NGOs, and other organizations. Garcia is the Executive Director of the Logos Institute for Crisis Management and Executive Leadership. He has advised clients in dozens of countries on six continents. For more than 29 years Garcia has been on the New York University faculty, where he teaches crisis management in the Executive MBA program of the Stern School of Business, and crisis communication in the MS in Public Relations and Corporate Communication of the School of Professional Studies. In both programs he has received awards for teaching excellence. He has also taught crisis on the faculties of other universities in California, Switzerland, and China. Through Logos Institute contracts he has taught at yet other universities and specialized professional schools in the U.S., including a number affiliated with the U.S. armed forces. He has guest lectured at dozens of universities around the world.
