Both SLPs and researchers must understand speech and language developments in children - and SLPs also need reliable assessment and intervention approaches for serving bilingual children with language disorders. This comprehensive text is one of the few to offer readers in-depth theoretical and practical information on these timely topics. brings together more than a dozen top researchers to present developmental data, best assessment practices, and appropriate intervention approaches in the following areas: language processing skills; lexical development; morpho-syntactic development; first language loss; grammatical impairments; semantic development; phonological development and disorders; narrative development and disorders; fluency; language intervention for bilingual speakers. The chapter outlines the major purposes of intervention for bilingual children with speech and language disorders, explores the debate over which language SLPs should use with bilingual children, and examines ways to promote gains in both languages. With this research-based text, SLPs will understand the complexity of language development in bilingual children and learn appropriate assessment and intervention approaches.

Understanding Individual Differences In Language Development Across The School Years written by J. Bruce Tomblin and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-26 with Education categories.

This volume presents the findings of a large-scale study of individual differences in spoken (and heard) language development during the school years. The goal of the study was to investigate the degree to which language abilities at school entry were stable over time and influential in the child’s overall success in important aspects of development. The methodology was a longitudinal study of over 600 children in the US Midwest during a 10-year period. The language skills of these children -- along with reading, academic, and psychosocial outcomes -- were measured. There was intentional oversampling of children with poor language ability without being associated with other developmental or sensory disorders. Furthermore, these children could be sub-grouped based on their nonverbal abilities, such that one group represents children with specific language impairment (SLI), and the other group with nonspecific language impairment (NLI) represents poor language along with depressed nonverbal abilities. Throughout the book, the authors consider whether these distinctions are supported by evidence obtained in this study and which aspects of development are impacted by poor language ability. Data are provided that allow conclusions to be made regarding the level of risk associated with different degrees of poor language and whether this risk should be viewed as lying on a continuum. The volume will appeal to researchers and professionals with an interest in children’s language development, particularly those working with children who have a range of language impairments. This includes Speech and Language Pathologists; Child Neuropsychologists; Clinical Psychologists working in Education, as well as Psycholinguists and Developmental Psychologists.

Childhood Language Disorders In Context written by Nickola Nelson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Medical categories.

Here is a comprehensive introduction to language disorders in children...one whose two-fold developmental/contextual perspective acknowledges that children's language learning systems include not only their skills, knowledge, and biological abilities...but also their language background, family settings, and the context in which they are attempting to learn language. The text's primary focus is on perspectives from normal development, and the bulk of the coverage is devoted to examination of expectations for early (infant through toddler), middle (preschool through early elementary), and later (middle elementary through adolescent) stages of learning language. These developmentally-geared divisions are then used to guide discussions of language assessment and intervention for children who are not learning language normally, yet who have characteristics in common with their peers who are.

Dual Language Development And Disorders written by Fred Genesee and has been published by Brookes Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Bilingualism in children categories.

This book explains normal and impaired dual language development and the differences between monolingual and dual language development so that professionals can understand these differences and successfully diagnose and treat dual language children with language delays and disorders. The book divides dual language children into two types: bilingual children, who have learned two languages from infancy, and second language learners, who are learning a second language after significant progress has been made with a first language. The book also breaks dual language learners into two types according to whether or not their primary language is widely used, has a high social value, and is typically associated with socioeconomic power. Case studies of four children representing each of these four groups are introduced in Chapter 1 and reoccur throughout the book. The final section of the book discusses assessment and intervention issues related to dual language children with impaired development.
