Are people's identities an effect of their membership of linguistic, national regional and ethnic groups, and does such group membership create problems for "inter-cultural communication"? These questions are addressed in this collection of nine papers from the Third Annual Conference of the Nordic Network for Intercultural Communications. Answers are drawn from general, theoretical, pedagogical and empirical points of view. They agree on one fundamental issue: the language-identity-cutlure complex, dynamic and overlapping rather than static and isomorphic. This leads the contributions to touch upon the political implications of a relational and dynamic view on language, culture, human rights and regional identities in a Europe with crumbling national boundaries. Among the topics are whether a person's identity is bound to a certain place and whether it is constant. Others discuss cross-cultural communication, a post-structuralist stance, different values ascribed to words and actions; the ability of people to interact with different cultures; the cross-cultural language link in language teaching; what language choice says about people and their attitudes towards each other when more than one language is available; and a recognition that most of us are members of several cultural groups, which can create incompatible values and attitudes.

The book's chapters address issues that are important not only in Southern Africa but also in other parts of the world. Although the focus and much of the data on language and identity are Southern African, most of the writers deal with their material in such a way as to locate it within theoretical debates and/or illuminate it with insights from related research in other parts of the world. The collection belongs to the constructivist paradigm and is one of the few works within this line of research. The issue of language and identity examines how language can become symbolic of the individual or group's identity. This aspect of language is explored from a variety of angles exhibiting different methods of investigation, and this - smorgasbord of methods provides ample inspiration for further studies in the field."

Essay from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: B, , language: English, abstract: According to structuralist and post-structuralist theories, identities are relational, and as such they are formed and shaped through communicative processes. In order to communicate, we need a common system of signs that can be understood by every member of the group, in everyday speech referred to as “language”. Although it is certainly true to say that language forms, reproduces and promotes identity, it must not be forgotten that identities are plural, intersect, interact and enter into conflict with each other, and language identity is no exception to this. Consequently, the relationship between language and identity, when taking a closer look at it, involves many different considerations and is not as clear-cut as one might anticipate.
