" This volume assembles Professor Halliday's most important recent essays on the functions of language in social communication. The investigation of 'language as social semiotic' means interpreting language within a sociocultural context, in which the culture itself is interpreted in semiotic terms- as an information system, to put it another way. The notion of language as one resource- albeit a principal one- in the exchange of meanings which constitute a culture requires a focus on language 'from the outside inwards', interpreting language by reference to its place in the social process. Professor Halliday's interest in linguistic questions is ultimately an 'applied' one, a concern with language in relation to the process and experience of socialization and education. The sociolinguistic patterns of the community, the language of family, neighbourhood and school, and the personal experience of language from earliest infancy are among the most fundamental elements in a child's environment for learning. This emphasis is directly reflected in the last part of this volume, on sociolinguistics and education; but it is indirectly present throughout, in discussion of areas ranging from the theoretical perspective and the sociosemantic nature of discourse to language in urban society and antilanguages."-- Publisher.

Social semiotics reveals language's social meaning – its structures, processes, conditions and effects – in all social contexts, across all media and modes of discourse. This important new book uses social semiotics as a one-stop shop to analyse language and social meaning, enhancing linguistics with a sociological imagination. Social Semiotics for a Complex World develops ideas, frameworks and strategies for better understanding key problems and issues involving language and social action in today's hyper-complex world driven by globalization and new media. Its semiotic basis incorporates insights from various schools of linguistics (such as cognitive linguistics, critical discourse analysis and sociolinguistics) as well as from sociology, anthropology, philosophy, psychology and literary studies. It employs a multi-modal perspective to follow meaning across all modes of language and media, and a multi-scalar approach that ranges between databases and one-word slogans, the local and global, with examples from English, Chinese and Spanish. Social semiotics analyses twists and turns of meanings big and small in complex contexts. This book uses semiotic principles to build a powerful, flexible analytic toolkit which will be invaluable for students across the humanities and social sciences.

"Semiotics - the study of the general principles of signs and sign systems - is crucial to an understanding of human nature, both social and psychological. The sign systems that we use for interaction with other living beings determine our potential for thought and social action, and language is central among them. It is the implicit claim of this two-volume work that linguistics has something very specific to give to semiotics, and many would further claim that relational network models of language in particular, i.e. systematic and stratificational linguistics, have a fundamental contribution to make."--Bloomsbury Publishing.
