The design of knowledge systems is finding myriad applications from corporate databases to general decision support in areas as diverse as engineering, manufacturing and other industrial processes, medicine, business, and economics. In engineering, for example, knowledge bases can be utilized for reliable electric power system operation. In medicine they support complex diagnoses, while in business they inform the process of strategic planning. Programmed securities trading and the defeat of chess champion Kasparov by IBM's Big Blue are two familiar examples of dedicated knowledge bases in combination with an expert system for decision-making.With volumes covering "Implementation," "Optimization," "Computer Techniques," and "Systems and Applications," this comprehensive set constitutes a unique reference source for students, practitioners, and researchers in computer science, engineering, and the broad range of applications areas for knowledge-based systems.

Knowledge based systems have emerged as an efficient solution for complex problems in many areas, including manufacturing and engineering. There are various situations, however, where neither symbolic procedures nor algorithmic routines can alone provide the answer. A balanced mixture of causal and heuristic processing modules offers a more efficient and comprehensive approach in complex cases. The different architecture types using the combination of these techniques are known as knowledge based hybrid systems (KBHS).This volume presents a comprehensive discussion of the interesting results achieved using KBHS. The papers, both practical and theoretical, are divided into seven major sections, each covering a separate topic: Hybrid Systems for CIM Applications, Knowledge Based Product Design, Coupling Learning with Other Paradigms, Problems of Manufacturing Automation, Hybrid Systems in Scheduling, Knowledge Based Simulation, and Hybrid Techniques in Monitoring and Maintenance.

This book collects the scientific papers presented at the 2nd Congress of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence, held in Palermo in October 1991. It displays the state of the art of both Italian and European scientific research in AI. The book begins with an invited paper by W. Wahlster et al. The bulk of the book is then divided into five parts on: - Knowledge representation (18 papers), - Knowledge acquisition (5 papers), - Natural language (5 papers), - Perception and robotics (5 papers), - Architecture and technologies (5 papers). A section containing short papers completes the book. The high quality of the papers reflects massive research activity mainly devoted to the theoretical aspects of AI, but clearly aimed at consolidating the results already achieved. Several contributions are oriented to the technological aspects of AI.

Annotation The book contains the Proceedings of KES 2002, the Sixth Edition of the Knowledge-Based Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems International Conference. The conference papers presented new research results, focusing on three main areas of interest: Generic Intelligent Techniques: This area includes results on basic disciplines underlying knowledge-based and intelligent systems, such as artificial neural networks, machine learning, knowledge-based systems, case-based reasoning, intelligent agents and soft computing. Applications of Intelligent Systems: The second area presents results on vertical applications of intelligent systems, including condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, industrial control, medical systems, image processing, financial & stock market monitoring and prediction, natural language processing and others. Allied Technologies: This area includes novel contributions on intelligent systems' applications to traditional research fields such as digital and computer communications, signal processing, virtual reality, multi-media, web-based technologies, human-computer interfaces and software engineering."

Maintenance Of Knowledge Based Systems written by Frans Coenen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Computers categories.
The practical take-up of Knowledge Based Systems (KBSs) is usually described as disappointing. One explanation of the reluctance of organisations to make a real commitment to these systems stems from the lack of well-defined techniques to engineer them in an acceptable manner. Without the assurance of quality that can be given by the use of a proven methodology, the risk of investing substantially in these systems will remain a risk too great to be taken. One of the chief manifestations of the lack of these techniques is that it is impossible to say with any assurance that it will be possible to maintain the systems so that their useful life can be extended. This book is concerned with the maintenance of KBSs, providing a balance between the academic and the practical, and containing analysis of tools developed in a research project. The intention of the book is to move from very general concerns available to all systems through to specific techniques and tools designed to address particular problems in particular representations, before concluding with some more general remarks. This book is essential reading for anyone, whether in a commercial or academic environment who wishes to build a serious Knowledge Based System that will continue to be used over a period of time. * SPECIAL FEATURES: * Building a Knowledge Based System is not the end of the story: the system must be used, and during its period of use, theknoledge on which it relies will change and develop. A Knowledge Based Ssystem that is not to become rapidly obselete must change and develop with it. * This book addresses this neglected area of maintenance, emhasising the specific maintenance tasks required by a Knowledge Based System. * The book provides a balance between the academic and the practical, and containg analysis of tools developed in a research project.

Handbook For Evaluating Knowledge Based Systems written by Leonard Adelman and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-04-30 with Business & Economics categories.
Knowledge-based systems are increasingly found in a wide variety of settings and this handbook has been written to meet a specific need in their widening use. While there have been many successful applications of knowledge-based systems, some applications have failed because they never received the corrective feedback that evaluation provides for keeping development focused on the users' needs in their actual working environment. This handbook provides a conceptual framework and compendium of methods for performing evaluations of knowledge-based systems during their development. Its focus is on the users' and subject matter experts' evaluation of the usefulness of the system, and not on the developers' testing of the adequacy of the programming code. The handbook permits evaluators to systematically answer the following kinds of questions: Does the knowledge-based system meet the users' task requirements? Is the system easy to use? Is the knowledge base logically consistent? Does it meet the required level of expertise? Does the system improve performance? The authors have produced a handbook that will serve two audiences: a tool that can be used to create knowledge-based systems (practitioners, developers, and evaluators) and a framework that will stimulate more research in the area (academic researchers and students). To accomplish this, the handbook is built around a conceptual framework that integrates the different types of evaluations into the system of development process. The kinds of questions that can be answered, and the methods available for answering them, will change throughout the system development life cycle. And throughout this process, one needs to know what can be done, and what can't. It is this dichotomy that addresses needs in both the practitioner and academic research audiences.
