This collection offers the first comprehensive discussion of the history, theory, and pedagogical applications of kairos, a seminal and recently revised concept of classical rhetoric. Augusto Rostagni, James L. Kinneavy, Richard Leo Enos, John Poulakos, and John E. Smith are among the international list of scholars who explore the Homeric and literary origins of kairos, the technologies of time-keeping in antiquity, the role of "right-timing" in Hippocratic medicine, the improvisations of Gorgias, as well as the uses of kairos in Isocrates, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and the New Testament. Broad in its scope, the book also examines the distinctive philosophies of time reflected in Renaissance Humanism, Nineteenth-Century American Transcendentalism, Oriental art and ritual, and the application of kairos to contemporary philosophy, ethics, literary criticism, rhetorical theory, and composition pedagogy.

Jenny Erpenbeck’s much anticipated new novel Kairos is a complicated love story set amidst swirling, cataclysmic events as the GDR collapses and an old world evaporates WINNER OF THE 2024 INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE LONGLISTED FOR THE 2023 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR TRANSLATED LITERATURE Jenny Erpenbeck (the author of Go, Went, Gone and Visitation) is an epic storyteller and arguably the most powerful voice in contemporary German literature. Erpenbeck’s new novel Kairos—an unforgettably compelling masterpiece—tells the story of the romance begun in East Berlin at the end of the 1980s when nineteen-year-old Katharina meets by chance a married writer in his fifties named Hans. Their passionate yet difficult long-running affair takes place against the background of the declining GDR, through the upheavals wrought by its dissolution in 1989 and then what comes after. In her unmistakable style and with enormous sweep, Erpenbeck describes the path of two lovers, as Katharina grows up and tries to come to terms with a not always ideal romance, even as a whole world with its own ideology disappears. As the Times Literary Supplement writes: “The weight of history, the particular experiences of East and West, and the ways in which cultural and subjective memory shape individual identity has always been present in Erpenbeck’s work. She knows that no one is all bad, no state all rotten, and she masterfully captures the existential bewilderment of this period between states and ideologies.” In the opinion of her superbly gifted translator Michael Hofmann, Kairos is the great post-Unification novel. And, as The New Republic has commented on his work as a translator: “Hofmann’s translation is invaluable—it achieves what translations are supposedly unable to do: it is at once ‘loyal’ and ‘beautiful.’”

Encouragement from the Author There have been significant moments that have altered the direction your life has gone. Each of the decisions you've made has created the reality you're experiencing today. Many of those instances were in your control and many of them were out of your control. These significant moments have affected your beliefs, your paradigms, your perception of the world around you and even, unbeknownst to you, the actions you have taken as a result. The significance of those moments was unconsciously determined by you and can be seen outwardly by the way you're living your life every day. Moment by moment, your thoughts have become the patterns that appear in your life and those patterns have created your daily actions. Your actions have led to the results you have right now. Your life is an unwritten book written based on the script you have created by your conscious and unconscious thoughts. This book is designed to help you rewrite the next chapter in your life. Reflect on the moments that have forever changed the direction of your life, both the moments where in an instant you knew your life would never be the same, as well as the moments where you didn't know why they happened until you looked back and hindsight cued you in on the exact reason. Those moments - the opportune or supreme moment - are your kairos moments, signifying a time lapse, a moment of indeterminate time in which everything happens. We often look at others and believe they "get all the breaks" or "they always have all the bad things happen to them." The chances are it's true and is a result of serendipity, luck, fortune, happenstance, opportunity, fate, coincidence or karma. Perhaps, it's actually divine intervention and it's your life unfolding the way it was designed and you are living it out accordingly. My belief is that Kairos, means "the appointed time in the purpose of God." When referring to Kairos, the subjective meaning depends on who is using the word. However, there an undeniable truth that the "seasons" you experience are temporal. While you may not have control of the circumstances in your life, you have control of the response and meaning connected to those circumstances. Those who create dream lifestyles take an opportune moment - a KARIOS moment - and make it a momentous opportunity for others. Life is about seizing those moments that could change everything you know. Change is constant and our lives need to change for us to be able to understand how to change more lives. When you look out for new beginnings your outlook will be renewed and restored. My hope is this book will be an opportune moment in your life. Perhaps getting this book and reading it the entire way through will become a Kairos moment in your life. What if the world wasn't out to get you but it was there to help you out to get what you want? What if the world wasn't conspiring against you but was conspiring for you? God loves you infinitely and wants you in His presence every moment, and if He knows that Heaven is a much better place for you, then why on Earth has He left you here? Let's find out together.
