Journal bearings, which are used in all kinds of rotating machinery, do not only support static loads, such as the weight of rotors and load caused by transmitted torque of reduction gears, but are, in addition almost the only machine element that is able to suppress various exciting forces acting on the rotating shaft. As rotating machines have become large and multi-staged, while compactness, high speed, and high output have also been realized in recent years, not only has the bearing load increased, but also the magnitude and variety of exciting forces. Therefore, the role and importance of journal bearings have increased tremendous ly. In particular, for the design of rotating machines with low vibration levels and high reliability, knowledge of the exact characteristic data of bearings, and especial ly of the stiffness or spring coefficients and the damping coefficients of oil films in bearings, is essential. However, the amount of reliable data now applicable to practical design is limited. Through the activity of the Research Subcommittee on Dynamic Charac teristics of Journal Bearings and Their Applications (designated as PSC 28), estab lished and organized in June 1979 through May 1982 within the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), these coefficients, together with static characteris tics, have been calculated and also measured on a number of new test rigs.

Hydrodynamic Lubrication written by Yukio Hori and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-07-28 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Hydrodynamic lubrication plays an important role in mechanical engineering, although not very many books have been published on the subject. This book was written with graduate students, researchers and designers in view. The first four chapters are preparations for the following five chapters, where several most important subjects in hydrodynamic lubrication are discussed in detail, based on the author’s own researches. Examples are oil whip (stability of rotating shafts), foil bearings in connection with magnetic tape storages, squeeze film between rigid surfaces and visco-elastic surfaces, theoretical and experimental analyses of temperature rise in bearings, those of turbulent lubricating film using the k-epsilon model.

Magnetic Bearings are bearings where the suspension forces are generated magnetically without any contact. The advantages to modern machinery are obvious: no mechanical wear, no lubrication, potential for high rotor speed, accuracy, and high dynamic performance, new constructional solutions to a classical problem in machine dynamics. The realization of such bearings is in rapid progress. Examples for application areas are turbomachinery, centrifuges, vacuum techniques, machine tool spindles, chemical industry, medical devices, robotics, high speed drives, spacecraft equipment, con tactless actuators, vibration isolation. The Symposium is demonstrating the current state of the art in this developing field of mechatronics, showing actual research efforts, reporting on applications in the various areas, and discussing open questions. The main purpose of the Symposium has been to establish a common information basis for people working on magnetic bearings. It will point to promising areas, and it will help to facilitate decisions on research and development projects, and on investments for applications.

As the most important parts of rotating machinery, rotors are also the most prone to mechanical vibrations, which may lead to machine failure. Correction is only possible when proper and accurate diagnosis is obtained through understanding of rotor operation and all of the potential malfunctions that may occur. Diagnosis and correction are critical tasks for the vibrations engineer. Many causes of rotor vibration are so subtle and pervasive that excessive vibration continues to occur despite the use of usually effective design practices and methods of avoidance. Rotating Machinery Vibration: From Analysis to Troubleshooting provides a comprehensive, consolidated overview of the fundamentals of rotating machinery vibration and addresses computer model building, sources and types of vibration, and machine vibration signal analysis. This reference is a powerful tool to strengthen vital in-house competency on the subject for professionals in a variety of fields. After presenting governing fundamental principles and background on modern measurement, computational tools, and troubleshooting methods, the author provides practical instruction and demonstration on how to diagnose vibration problems and formulate solutions. The topic is covered in four sequential sections: Primer on Rotor Vibration, Use of Rotor Dynamic Analyses, Monitoring and Diagnostics, and Troubleshooting Case Studies. This book includes comprehensive descriptions of vibration symptoms for rotor unbalance, dynamic instability, rotor-stator rubs, misalignment, loose parts, cracked shafts, and rub-induced thermal bows. It is an essential reference for mechanical, chemical, design, manufacturing, materials, aerospace, and reliability engineers. Particularly useful as a reference for specialists in vibration, rotating machinery, and turbomachinery, it also makes an ideal text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines.
