John Wesley inherited his rich legacy from various sources that were instrumental in shaping his ecclesiology. The major traditions on which he drew include primitivism, Anglicanism, Puritanism, and Pietism. He also drew, although not heavily, on the mystics of Roman Catholicism and, indirectly, on the reformers. Wesley's doctrine was an amalgam of the multiple traditions that he inherited and sought to appropriate in a creative eclecticism. This book is an attempt to interpret Wesley's ecclesiology in a comprehensive setting. Wesley's ecclesiology provides Wesleyan Churches with a renewed understanding of their origins and a model for moving toward truly catholic, thoroughly evangelical, and continually reformed church.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an interpretation of John Wesley's ecclesiology that strongly asserts his loyalty to the Church of England. Prior works have approached the issue retroactively, claiming Wesley intended separation from the Church of England primarily because the Methodist societies eventually became an autonomous Christian denomination. Though it has been suggested that Wesley's allegiance to, and passion for, Methodism often superseded and ultimately dictated his ecclesiology, the present work contends otherwise. Rather than reading Wesley as first a Methodist and then a Church of England clergyman, this thesis interprets Wesley as first a Church of England clergyman and subsequently as a Methodist. An account of the evolution of the Church of England from Henry VIII to Wesley's day, highlighting influential Anglican theologians (Thomas Cranmer, Richard Hooker, Jeremy Taylor, Daniel Brevint, and the Nonjurors) provides a framework of ecclesial thought from which Wesley's own thought and practice emerged. This approach yields a fresh interpretation, revealing Wesley's allegiance to the established Church as deeper than previously noted. Using Article XIX of the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion as an outline, the second part of this thesis addresses key issues of Wesley's ecclesiology, emphasising the tension that emerged as Wesley sought to embody and promote an integration of evangelical practice with sacramental holiness. It is within this tension one finds the ecclesiology of Wesley, rooted in the sacramental life of the Church, but not defined by the status quo. Some scholars of past and present have misrepresented his ecclesiology by allowing his evangelical practices to overshadow his sacramental theology. The present work promotes a new perspective on certain evangelical practices that are integrated with Wesley's Anglican roots. This is clearly represented in the final chapter, which re-interprets Wesley's actions of 1784 in light of new research into the writing of his contemporary, William White. In developing this model of interpretation, Wesley emerges as an Anglican theologian whose ecclesiology is a fusion of sacramental holiness and evangelical practice.

John Wesley’s Teachings is the first systematic exposition of John Wesley's theology that is also faithful to Wesley's own writings. Wesley was a prolific writer and commentator on Scripture—his collected works fill eighteen volumes—and yet it is commonly held that he was not systematic or consistent in his theology and teachings. On the contrary, Thomas C. Oden demonstrates that Wesley displayed a remarkable degree of internal consistency over sixty years of preaching and ministry. This series of 4 volumes is a text-by-text guide to John Wesley’s teaching. It introduces Wesley’s thought on the basic tenets of Christian teaching: God, providence, and man (volume 1), Christ and salvation (volume 2), the practice of pastoral care (volume 3), and issues of ethics and society (volume 4). In everyday modern English, Oden clarifies Wesley’s explicit intent and communicates his meaning clearly to a contemporary audience. Both lay and professional readers will find this series useful for devotional reading, moral reflection, sermon preparation, and for referencing Wesley’s opinions on a broad range of pressing issues of contemporary society.
