"Islamic Culture: A Study of Cultural Anthropology," illustrates Islamic culture from an anthropological point of view. It shows that Islam as a way of life relates to all cultural aspects based upon the tradition of its Prophet, Mohammad. For the first time, this study shows that the Prophet of Islam is the founder of Islamic culture and this culture is not an inherited concept but based upon a revelation received from God.

Islamic Culture in Crisis examines efforts by intellectuals and leaders in the Islamic world to adapt to what Hichem Djaït calls the “incredible novelty of modernity” that has come to Europe during the past 150 years. The chapters in the work are grouped into three sections, and were written by the author over a twenty-year period. Djaït describes the different meanings of modernity, the crisis of Islamic culture in its encounter with modernity, similarities and differences between Arabs and Muslims and other cultures, the politics of the Arabs, and the force of democracy in the Islamic world. In the sphere of politics, the Arabs have been excluded from history for a very long time. Instead, Turks, Mongols, Berbers, Persians, and Caucasians have led the destinies of the Islamic world, a domain that had become politically fragmented. But history has overlooked the concrete developments of that time, although they were full of consequences for the lives of the people. Paradoxically, what remains are the spiritual, trans-historic elements: religion, culture, and science. Contrasting the achievements of other civilizations, both past and present, Djaït demonstrates eloquently that Arabs and Muslims will not be able to connect with the modern world unless they are able to be inspired by a supreme ambition to further the causes of high culture—in knowledge, science, art, literature, and other spheres.

This volume, the first of six to be published, studies fundamental values of Islam, along with the nature of rights and the responsibilities in a general context. The authors analyse the development of social thought and morality in Islam, and ways in which they are enforced through the family and education. Particular attention is paid to the status of women, children, youth and the socially excluded. Several chapters broach specially Islamic approaches to economics, government and justice. A world religion since its inception in the seventh century A.D., Islam is today seeking vigorous answers to contemporary problems through its multi-faceted history. Issues of poverty and wealth, inequality and demands for political expression, and respect for diversity in a difficult world of conformity are dealt with in this series. The study is organized along thematic rather than chronological lines and thus it is not necessary to read the volumes in order. Volume II is in fact the first to have been published. Volume IV is forthcoming end 2002, volume V mid 2003 and volumes III and VI in 2004. More than one-and-a-half billion Muslims of all races, nationalities, and ethnicities live in the world today, but the birthplace of Islam is the Middle East. Islam is a religion based on the revelations given to the Prophet Muhammad. These teachings are contained in the Quran, Islam s holy book. Like other religions, Islam preaches peace and love for others. Also like other religions, Islam s teachings are often interpreted differently by different people. These people may use violence towards other Muslims and non-Muslims alike to spread their version of Islam around the world. Because these people often make headlines, not everyone understands that these people don t represent the majority of Muslims. But the first step towards tolerance and peace is understanding. In this book, we ll explore the culture and everyday lives of Muslims in the Middle East. It is more important today than ever before to understand Islamic culture in order to create greater acceptance among people of all faiths.
