This study explores the contestation of the public sphere by ten Islamic groups and traditions in colonial India. The groups studied here represent reformist and revivalist traditions with a significant degree of heterogeneity. They comprise seminary movements organized around a particular lead madrasa (Deobandi, Barelwi, Nadwa, Firangi Mahal, Aligarh) and revival movements attempting to increase religious awareness in ritual observance, in public life, and in politics, which this book closely examines. A common concern of the Islamic project in South Asia becomes discernible on looking closely at the discourses of these schools and movements and their lines of activity. Various issues which arose as a result of their activities eventually became entangled with the political awakening in India brought about by the nationalist movement led by the Indian National Congress. These challenges caused Islamic groups to formulate their own project for society and an Islamic polity in India. This project evolved over time from scholarly debates to political action and social concepts. They took up political issues related to the status of Islam in India, the Islamic world and vis-à-vis British colonial rule the debate over the role of Islamic groups in the public sphere and the formation of an Islamic sector within it can serve as a catalyst for a better understanding of the diverse trends and models of their interaction.

Many Americans associate Islam-and Islamist terrorism-exclusively with the greater Middle East. Yet the countries with the largest Muslim populations are actually located in Asia, where Islamic extremism is also a significant and growing concern. This volume provides essential background and surveys recent trends. It examines a variety of homegrown Asian terrorist groups, detailing their goals, methods, and links with international organizations such as al-Qaeda. It also outlines the options available to U.S. policymakers and to Asian governments as they attempt to stem the tide of militant Islam.

Diverse Islamic groups have triggered a »revival of Islam« in Central Asia in the last decades. As a result, there has been a general securitization of Islam by the governments: not only do they combat the terrorist Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan but also outlaw popular groups such as the Gülen movement. However, strong repression of religion might lead to radicalization. Kathrin Lenz-Raymann tests this hypothesis with an agent-based computer simulation and enriches her study with interviews with international experts, leaders of political Islam and representatives of folk Islam. She concludes that ensuring religious rights is essential for national security.

In Organizing Muslims and Integrating Islam in Germany, Kerstin Rosenow-Williams analyzes the challenges faced by Islamic organizations in Germany since the beginning of the 21st century. Outlining the expectations German political actors have of Islamic organizations and the internal interests of these organizations, the author illustrates that organizational response strategies involve patterns not only of adaptation, but also of decoupling and protest. The study introduces an innovative research framework based on organizational sociology and provides empirical insights into three major Islamic umbrella organizations (DITIB, IGMG, ZMD) and their relationships with other actors. The comprehensive analysis of the German institutional environment and related developments in Islamic organizations makes this study highly relevant to scholars and politicians, as well as the general public.

The growing importance of Islam in the world coincides with the growing interest by scholars in understanding Islam as a religion and its political and social influences. The geographic scope of Islam goes far beyond the Middle East, and there is a vast diversity of Islamic movements. But of the main categories of Islamic groups, only the Islamist political groups, such as al-Qaida and Hizballah have been documented; these are only a small portion of the variety and stance of groups. Indeed, the 'Arab Spring' has brought a resurgence of Islamic, as well as Islamist, civil society organizations. This new four-volume set provides a comprehensive study of the other main categories of movements: the Muslim non-political, non-Islamist groups, including charitable and educational organizations as well as the association of imams, courts, and so on; the Muslim non-Islamist political groups, that is the efforts to create communal representational or communal interest groups, commonly called 'moderate Muslim' groupings; and the non-political aspects of Islamist groups, that is the social welfare, educational, theologically oriented, and special interest organizations created by Islamist groups to spread their influence and enlarge their base of support. This truly ground-breaking and timely work collects for the first time in one reference work the latest scholarship on a previously-neglected aspect of the Muslim political and social experience, and will be invaluable to researchers and students across a wide range of disciplines.

This book focuses on Islam in Indonesia, showcasing the wide range of Muslim organisations, belief systems and movements, together with an analysis of the political behaviour of Indonesian Muslims. It includes an investigation of the structure of groups, organizations, and societies, and how Muslims within the archipelago interact within these contexts. In doing so, it promotes a more nuanced understanding of Indonesian Muslim society by approaching it through the utilisation of scholarly frameworks. Theories related to religion and society are used, especially in characterising the transition of the Indonesian Muslim society from pre-New Order to post-New Order. Particularly significant is Abdullah Saeed's framework in understanding one’s attitude towards key and contemporary issues, originally used to understand one’s attitude towards the religious ‘other’. The authors thus adopt this framework in the book, as a method of categorising people in a diverse society which in turnhelps readers to understand the nuances of Islam and Muslims in a huge country like Indonesia.
