In this book the author provides a readily accessible, uncomplicated account of how some semiconductor devices work and why they are designed as they are. Assuming only the most rudimentary understanding of electronic circuits, it is truly introductory, illustrating the general principles underlying the whole range of devices and systems. Self assessment tests are liberally distributed throughout to allow the reader to gauge their understanding of the material as they work through, and exercises are given at the end of each chapter with full solutions provided for all. The author's easy-to-read style results in a text that will prove invaluable to all requiring an insight into the theory of semiconductors that will be essential for more advanced studies.

The aim of this book is a discussion, at the introductory level, of some applications of solid state physics. The book evolved from notes written for a course offered three times in the Department of Physics of the University of California at Berkeley. The objects of the course were (a) to broaden the knowledge of graduate students in physics, especially those in solid state physics; (b) to provide a useful course covering the physics of a variety of solid state devices for students in several areas of physics; (c) to indicate some areas of research in applied solid state physics. To achieve these ends, this book is designed to be a survey of the physics of a number of solid state devices. As the italics indicate, the key words in this description are physics and survey. Physics is a key word because the book stresses the basic qualitative physics of the applications, in enough depth to explain the essentials of how a device works but not deeply enough to allow the reader to design one. The question emphasized is how the solid state physics of the application results in the basic useful property of the device. An example is how the physics of the tunnel diode results in a negative dynamic resistance. Specific circuit applications of devices are mentioned, but not emphasized, since expositions are available in the elec trical engineering textbooks given as references.

Introduction To Solid State Electronics written by Ija P. Ipatova and has been published by Perseus Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Introduction to Solid-State Electronics combines a modern presentation of semiconductor physics with a description of the principles of semiconductor devices. It unites the authors’ extensive teaching and research experience with the requirements of an introductory graduate course in Solid-State Electronics for engineering students. Since a crystal is an object of high symmetry, some simple techniques—which do not require knowledge of the mathematical groups at the professional level—are used for the application of symmetry to the analysis of band structures. The textbook outlines the properties of low-dimensional structures in parallel with those of bulk materials. The authors have made the mathematical derivations both as self-contained and as simple as possible without using arguments of the type “it can be easily shown that.…” This technique is just one of many that enables the book to provide a clear, comprehensive understanding of the main properties of semiconductors and their relations to device structures.

This book is a lucid presentation for chemists, electrical engineers, surface scientists, and solid-state physicists, of the fundamentals underlying the construction of simple and small chemical sensors. The first part of the book is a review of the theoretical background in solid state physics, chemistry and electronics. Semiconductor and solid electrolyte bulk models are reviewed as well as solid/gas and solid/liquid interface models. Membranes and catalysis theory are also covered expansively. The second part is a discussion of more complete sensor devices, their essential components, and of the important developments in this area over the last fifteen to twenty years. The book provides guidance through the multidisciplinary world of chemical sensors. It should be understandable to students with some training in physics and chemistry and a general knowledge of electronics. Finally, comments on economic considerations in the development of new sensor products and suggestionsfor future research and development should be of value to company R&D planners.
