Excerpt from Introduction to the Elementary Functions This book is an attempt to solve the problem of the first-year collegiate course in mathematics. That the problem is a very real one is attested by the many discussions constantly taking place among teachers of mathematics and others interested in education. The traditional Freshman course, consisting of "college algebra," trigonometry, and solid geometry or elementary analytic geometry, is very generally regarded as unsatisfactory. There are three main objections to this traditional course: first, it is not unified, so that it sacrifices time and fails to hold the student's interest; secondly, much of the subject matter should come after a first course in calculus, when it would gain vastly in significance; thirdly, the usual plan has deprived the large majority of college students of any introduction to the calculus, which is the heart and soul of modern mathematics and natural science. Only that small number electing to go beyond the first year of collegiate mathematics have the opportunity to become acquainted with the subject, which unquestionably represents one of the most important lines of development of human thought during the past two centuries. Accordingly, we decided to construct a course with the fundamental idea of functionality as its unifying principle, and leading up to some elementary work in calculus as its culmination. The advantages of this arrangement are that it not only meets the objections stated in the preceding paragraph, but saves time by avoiding the repetition inevitable in the triple arrangement of subjects; and, what is more important, it leads to a deeper understanding of the significance of mathematical principles and relations than the student is likely to gain through the traditional course. This textbook focuses on the study of different kinds of elementary functions ubiquitous both in high school Algebra and Calculus. To analyze the functions ranging from polynomial to trigonometric ones, it uses rudimentary techniques available to high school students, and at the same time follows the mathematical rigor appropriate for university level courses. Contrary to other books of Pre-Calculus, this textbook emphasizes the study of elementary functions with rigor appropriate for university level courses in mathematics, although the exposition is confined to the pre-limit topics and techniques. This makes the book useful, on the one hand, as an introduction to mathematical reasoning and methods of proofs in mathematical analysis, and on the other hand, as a preparatory course on the properties of different kinds of elementary functions. The textbook is aimed at university freshmen and high-school students interested in learning strict mathematical reasoning and in preparing a solid base for subsequent study of elementary functions at advanced level of Calculus and Analysis. The required prerequisites correspond to the level of the high school Algebra. All the preliminary concepts and results related to the elementary functions are covered in the initial part of the text. This makes the textbook suitable for both classroom use and self-study.

Excerpt from Introduction to the Elementary Functions The trigonometric functions are introduced early, and the gen eral definitions are given at once, instead 'oi those valid only for the acute angle. Thus the connection with the coordinate system is established from the first, and a clearer idea of the meaning of the trigonometric functions is obtained than if the student's atten tion is for some time confined to the case of the acute angle. The applications of the trigonometric functions to the solution of right triangles and problems depending upon them is made without the use of logarithms, as experience shows that the early introduction of logarithms may easily lead to mechanical methods of work. From the reviews: "Volume 1 covers a basic course in real analysis of one variable and Fourier series. It is well-illustrated, well-motivated and very well-provided with a multitude of unusually useful and accessible exercises. (...) There are three aspects of Courant and John in which it outshines (some) contemporaries: (i) the extensive historical references, (ii) the chapter on numerical methods, and (iii) the two chapters on physics and geometry. The exercises in Courant and John are put together purposefully, and either look numerically interesting, or are intuitively significant, or lead to applications. It is the best text known to the reviewer for anyone trying to make an analysis course less abstract. (...)" The Mathematical Gazette (75.1991.471)
