Due to the rapid growth of digital communication and electronic data exchange, information security has become a crucial issue in industry, business, and administration. Modern cryptography provides essential techniques for securing information and protecting data. In the first part, this book covers the key concepts of cryptography on an undergraduate level, from encryption and digital signatures to cryptographic protocols. Essential techniques are demonstrated in protocols for key exchange, user identification, electronic elections and digital cash. In the second part, more advanced topics are addressed, such as the bit security of one-way functions and computationally perfect pseudorandom bit generators. The security of cryptographic schemes is a central topic. Typical examples of provably secure encryption and signature schemes and their security proofs are given. Though particular attention is given to the mathematical foundations, no special background in mathematics is presumed. The necessary algebra, number theory and probability theory are included in the appendix. Each chapter closes with a collection of exercises. The second edition contains corrections, revisions and new material, including a complete description of the AES, an extended section on cryptographic hash functions, a new section on random oracle proofs, and a new section on public-key encryption schemes that are provably secure against adaptively-chosen-ciphertext attacks.

The practice and study of methods for secure communication in the presence of hostile third parties is known as cryptography. It consists of construction and analysis of protocols to prevent third parties from reading private messages. Some of the important aspects of cryptography are data integrity, data confidentiality, authentication and non-repudiation. There are several applications of this field of study such as digital currencies, military communications and electronic commerce. The field of cryptography consists of different areas of study like symmetric-key cryptography and public key cryptography. The sphere of study which seeks to detect insecurity or weakness in a cryptographic scheme is known as cryptanalysis. This book provides significant information of this discipline to help develop a good understanding of cryptography and related fields. Those in search of information to further their knowledge will be greatly assisted by this book. It will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.

"Electronic communication and financial transactions have assumed massive proportions today. But they comprise high risks too. Achieving cyber security has become a top priority, and has become one of the most crucial areas of study and research in IT.?This book introduces readers to perhaps the most effective tool in achieving a secure environment, i.e. cryptography. Students who have elementary knowledge of mathematics, will be introduced to mathematical notions relevant to cryptography, and the design and analysis of the cryptographic schemes. More advanced students who have already a background of algebra, number theory, probability and algorithms; will be able to review the applications of secure systems and will be introduced to cryptographic primitives and current research, besides being exposed to scope of future research addressing the open problems in related area. This book gives more solved examples than most books on the subject, it includes state of the art topics and discusses the scope of future research."--Provided by publisher.

Cryptography is a part of everyday life for almost all of us, though we may not realise we're using it. We are a far cry from the historical prediction that cryptography would only be used by militaries and governments. With vast quantities of sensitive information transferred online by individuals, companies, organizations, and nation states, cryptography is increasingly important to everyone, and most of us, often without realising, use it daily. Cryptography: A Very Short Introduction demystifies the art of cryptography by tracing its historical use, explaining how it works, and providing examples of its practical use. These include online shopping, chip and PIN bank cards, and communicating via mobile phone. While many of these uses have been mainstream for some time now, the development and deployment of cryptography has changed enormously in the last twenty years. In this second edition, Sean Murphy and Rachel Player highlight the important advances in both academic cryptography research and its everyday use. Using non-technical language and without assuming advanced mathematical knowledge, they introduce symmetric and public-key cryptography and provide a detailed discussion of the design of cryptographic algorithms that are secure against quantum computers and the development of cryptographic algorithms with advanced functionalities. They also consider the new applications of cryptography such as blockchain, secure messaging apps, and electronic voting. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
