This book presents an integrated systems approach to the evaluation, analysis, design, and maintenance of civil engineering systems. Addressing recent concerns about the world's aging civil infrastructure and its environmental impact, the author makes the case for why any civil infrastructure should be seen as part of a larger whole. He walks readers through all phases of a civil project, from feasibility assessment to construction to operations, explaining how to evaluate tasks and challenges at each phase using a holistic approach. Unique coverage of ethics, legal issues, and management is also included.

Eminent historians agree that the amount of history a profession has been preserved, honored, used, and known influences how well it is understood and accepted by others. This is especially true for engineers, who despite their rich and long history tend to ignore their heritage and focus on current trends or state-of the-art in their specific areas of practice. The context in which civil engineering is defined is engineering systems in general. This article will present general definitions and then go on to more specific definitions. Engineering is simply the use of science, mathematics and business to efficiently harness the natural resources to create structures and facilities that will benefit society in the present and the future. CIVIL-ENGINEERING SYTEM--THE BRANCHES The intended use of a facility can help to classify civil engineering. This includes heavy, industrial, commercial and residential as well as the branches of civil engineer (hydraulic and hydrologic, transportation and architectural, materials and construction, structural, geomatic and geotechnical). Each facility type has its own construction. The civil engineering branches of geomatics and architectural, materials construction, structural, or geotechnical engineering are involved. Operations are directly related to at least one branch of civil engineering: hydraulics, hydrologics transportation, architectural and engineering. STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING SYSTEMS Structural engineering analysis can be applied to any physical object that has the potential to support, resist, or dissipate dead or living loads. Structural engineers analyze and design load-bearing civil engineering or architectural structures, including towers, bridges and tunnels, dams and retaining walls. They also examine noncivil structures, such as equipment and vehicles (land or sea), where structural integrity is crucial for safety and serviceability.

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, roads, pipelines, airports, bridges, canals, dams, sewerage systems, structural components of buildings, and railways. This book begins with an introduction and background information into the history of civil engineering from the ancient times to the present. The text explores the lives of the great civil engineers in history. Readers are also introduced to how great structures were built, the challenges that were faced and the significance of these past achievements to construction today. Explored here are also great civil engineering projects that have transformed humanity. Construction materials have evolved with time and those progresses are highlighted here. Also, you are presented with the nature of the civil engineering profession and brief highlights into what is required of young graduate and professionals to succeed in the field as a civil engineer. Finally, the book includes a chapter on what the future of civil engineering will be.
