It is often the case - perhaps more often than not - that new ideas arrive long before there is the me ans to clothe and deli ver them. We can think ofLeonardo da Vinci's drawings of helicopters and submarines among many other examples. Computer-Assisted Learning (CAL) is an example of an idea which has had a particularly long gestation. As I will illustrate early in the book, the principles of CAL were really first discovered by Socrates. As a formal method of teaching, the Socratic method disappeared for over two millennia until the 1950s. It was then revived in the form ofProgrammed Learning (PL) which resulted from the researches ofB. F. Skinner at Harvard University. Even then, PL was premature. In the 1950s and 60s, methods were devised, such as teaching machines and various sorts ofPL text books, and there was a mushrooming of PL publishing at that time. For a complex of reason- economic, logistical and technical-PL also largely disappeared from the mid- 60s, although it continued in a few specialized areas ofteaching and industrial training. However, during the same period, PL quietly transformed itselfinto CAL. But the computerized form was not capable of mass dissemination until recently hecause personal microcomputers did not have sufficient internal memory sizes. That situation has now changed very dramatically and 128K microcomputers are becoming cheap and widely available. Cheap memory chips of256K and 1024K cannot be far away, either.

Mathematical Methods in Chemical and Biological Engineering describes basic to moderately advanced mathematical techniques useful for shaping the model-based analysis of chemical and biological engineering systems. Covering an ideal balance of basic mathematical principles and applications to physico-chemical problems, this book presents examples drawn from recent scientific and technical literature on chemical engineering, biological and biomedical engineering, food processing, and a variety of diffusional problems to demonstrate the real-world value of the mathematical methods. Emphasis is placed on the background and physical understanding of the problems to prepare students for future challenging and innovative applications.

Essentials of Vehicle Dynamics explains the essential mathematical basis of vehicle dynamics in a concise and clear way, providing engineers and students with the qualitative understanding of vehicle handling performance needed to underpin chassis-related research and development.Without a sound understanding of the mathematical tools and principles underlying the complex models in vehicle dynamics, engineers can end up with errors in their analyses and assumptions, leading to costly mistakes in design and virtual prototyping activities. Author Joop P. Pauwelussen looks to rectify this by drawing on his 15 years' experience of helping students and professionals understand the vehicle as a dynamic system. He begins as simply as possible before moving on to tackle models of increasing complexity, emphasizing the critical role played by tire-road contact and the different analysis tools required to consider non-linear dynamical systems.Providing a basic mathematical background that is ideal for students or those with practical experience who are struggling with the theory, Essentials of Vehicle Dynamics is also intended to help engineers from different disciplines, such as control and electronic engineering, move into the automotive sector or undertake multi-disciplinary vehicle dynamics work. - Focuses on the underlying mathematical fundamentals of vehicle dynamics, equipping engineers and students to grasp and apply more complex concepts with ease. - Written to help engineers avoid the costly errors in design and simulation brought about by incomplete understanding of modeling tools and approaches. - Includes exercises to help readers test their qualitative understanding and explain results in physical and vehicle dynamics terms.

Following his acclaimed guides to air, fire, and water, David Carle now offers a fascinating exploration of one more primary element of the natural world—the land beneath our feet. From earthworms and earthquakes to Earth Day, this concise, engaging guide is a multifaceted primer on the literal foundation of California’s environment. Carle tells how soil ecosystems function, discusses what lives in the soil, and examines various soil types. He then turns to the relationship between humans and the land, and investigates the various uses and abuses that land in California endures: large scale agriculture, mining, and development, as well as fires, floods, and erosion. The guide also details the history of land use in the state, making it an essential resource for understanding our total reliance on soil, the marvelous substrate that is the basis of life. • Covers the entire state, including California’s wildlands, farmland, cities, and landfills • Assesses California’s ecological footprint on planet Earth • Discusses many different life forms found in soil, including bacteria, fungi, insects, and mammals • Features 92 color photographs and 18 maps A book in the Californians and Their Environment subseries, dedicated to understanding human influences on the state's ecology and natural resources

Conversation Analysis And Language Teacher Education written by Olcay Sert and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-09-09 with Education categories.

Reconceptualizing intervention and change in conversation analytic perspectives, this volume not only illustrates actual, rather than imagined, ways of conducting CA-informed interventions in a variety of teacher-training contexts around the globe but also documents the impact of such interventions on teacher development. “The contributors to this volume have intentionally moved CA beyond a descriptive methodology to recognizing how CA-influenced decisions and procedures can, and do, result in productive changes in teachers’ interactional and instructional pedagogies. A gift to the field of Language Teacher Education, this volume offers rich data-driven evidence of the material impact of engagement with CA on the professional development of language teachers.” (Karen E. Johnson, The Pennsylvania State University, USA) “The contributors illustrate how CA-based frameworks can help both pre-service and in-service language teachers sharpen their professional vision and enhance their pedagogical skills, making a compelling case for integrating CA into language teacher education while offering concrete guidance for developing teachers' interactional awareness and competence. This groundbreaking volume will be a key reading in both Applied Linguistics and TESOL programmes.” (Steve Mann, University of Warwick, UK) “Conversation Analysis (CA) should be an integral part of teacher-training programs. This plea is convincingly made in this new volume. After many years of CA studies of classroom interaction, it was only a matter of time before CA should enter teacher-training programs. The reports from the US, Sweden, Germany, Türkiye and Japan in this volume show that that time is now.” (Tom Koole, University of Groningen, The Netherlands) Olcay Sert is Professor of Language Education at Mälardalen University (Sweden). He is leading the Mälardalen INteraction & Didactics (MIND) Research Group and is the editor of Classroom Discourse. Hansun Zhang Waring is Professor of Linguistics and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University (USA) and founder of The Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI).
