Intermediality: the incorporation of digital technology into theatre practice, and the presence of film, television and digital media in contemporary theatre is a significant feature of twentieth-century performance. Presented here for the first time is a major collection of essays, written by the Theatre and Intermediality Research Group of the International Federation for Theatre Research, which assesses intermediality in theatre and performance. The book draws on the history of ideas to present a concept of intermediality as an integration of thoughts and medial processes, and it locates intermediality at the inter-sections situated in-between the performers, the observers and the confluence of media, medial spaces and art forms involved in performance at a particular moment in time. Referencing examples from contemporary theatre, cinema, television, opera, dance and puppet theatre, the book puts forward a thesis that the intermedial is a space where the boundaries soften and we are in-between and within a mixing of space, media and realities, with theatre providing the staging space for intermediality. The book places theatre and performance at the heart of the 'new media' debate and will be of keen interest to students, with clear relevance to undergraduates and post-graduates in Theatre Studies and Film and Media Studies, as well as the theatre research community.

This handbook offers students and researchers compact orientation in their study of intermedial phenomena in Anglophone literary texts and cultures by introducing them to current academic debates, theoretical concepts and methodologies. By combining theory with text analysis and contextual anchoring, it introduces students and scholars alike to a vast field of research which encompasses concepts such as intermediality, multi- and plurimediality, intermedial reference, transmediality, ekphrasis, as well as related concepts such as visual culture, remediation, adaptation, and multimodality, which are all discussed in connection with literary examples. Hence each of the 30 contributions spans both a theoretical approach and concrete analysis of literary texts from different centuries and different Anglophone cultures.

The ‘narrative turn’ in the humanities, which expanded the study of narrative to various disciplines, has found a correlate in the ‘medial turn’ in narratology. Long restricted to language-based literary fiction, narratology has found new life in the recognition that storytelling can take place in a variety of media, and often combines signs belonging to different semiotic categories: visual, auditory, linguistic and perhaps even tactile. The essays gathered in this volume apply the newly gained awareness of the expressive power of media to particular texts, demonstrating the productivity of a medium-aware analysis. Through the examination of a wide variety of different media, ranging from widely studied, such as literature and film, to new, neglected, or non-standard ones, such as graphic novels, photography, television, musicals, computer games and advertising, they address some of the most fundamental questions raised by the medial turn in narratology: how can narrative meaning be created in media other than language; how do different types of signs collaborate with each other in so-called ‘multi-modal works’, and what new forms of narrativity are made possible by the emergence of digital media.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, Free University of Berlin (Fachbereich Englisch), course: Literary Concepts II: Intermediality, language: English, abstract: [...] In his seventh novel The Ground Beneath Her Feet (hereafter GF), Rushdie tells the love story of the 20th century pop icons Vina Aspara and Ormus Cama. However, GF is not exclusively about love since the novel also combines a lot of historical and mythological aspects with the mainstream pop culture of the 20th century. In fact, the field of pop music seems to be central next to the novel's love theme because throughout the whole book, extracts of original and remodelled song lyrics are incorporated into the texture of GF, and these song lyrics are - amongst many other things - used to reflect the love between the novel's protagonists. Furthermore, the subject of music is also realised by the adoption of another strategy. Although the novel is said to be fictional, GF "tries to blur the edges between the fictional world and the real world" [Rushdie, interview with Vijaya Nagarajan 1999]. Therefore, Rushdie applied the technique of the alienation effect, which aims to make the familiar seem strange. This technique was predominantly realised by embedding mythological aspects in the story of GF and changing historical events which actually happened. Consequently, Rushdie created a "parallel version of the world", which is slightly different from reality. The most influential aspect which makes the familiar life of the novel's pop stars seem strange is its comparison with the Orpheus myth. Moreover, the Orpheus myth dignifies music as it basically declares that 'one can kill the singer, but not the song.' Since the subject of music seems to be of crucial importance in GF, and Salman Rushdie regards pop music as the "first cultural phenomenon of extraordinary force" [Rushdie, interview with Vijaya Nagarajan 1999], this paper aims to explore which differ

The relationship between different media has emerged as one of the most important areas of research in contemporary cultural and literary studies. But how should we conceive of the relationship between texts and images today? Should we speak of collaboration, interaction or competition? What is the role of literary, historical and scientific texts in a culture dominated by the visual? What is the status of images as cultural artefacts? Are images forms of representation, do they simulate reality or do they intervene in the material world? And how do literature and cultural theory - themselves essentially textual discourses - react to the much-discussed visual turn within Western culture? Does the concept of 'intermediality' allow literary, historical and cultural scholars to envisage a more general theory of media? Addressing these questions from a programmatic point of view, the articles in this volume investigate the effects of different forms of representation in modern European and American literature, media and thought.

Intermediality And Media Change written by Juha Herkman and has been published by University of Tampere this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Intermediality categories.

Abstract: This book is about intermediality as an approach to analysing and understanding media change. Intermediality and Media Change is critical of technological determinism that characterises 'new media discourse' about the ongoing digitalization, framed as a revolution and creating sharp contrasts between old and new media. Intermediality instead emphasises paying attention to continuities between media of all types and privileges a comparative perspective on technological changes in media over time and space. The concept of intermediality refers to interaction and interrelationships between media. This focus is important in two ways. It strengthens the mutual construction and articulation of media (forms) as a vital element of the research agenda. In contrast to the emphasis on convergence, it also permits the consideration of the parallel construction and articulation of specific features and identities that characterise a medium, as well as the emergence of new divergences. Intermediality and Media Change studies intermediality from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The book starts by positioning intermediality as a theory and a methodological approach. The first group of articles focuses on critical reflection of media and mediation as concepts. The second group deals with intermediality in discourses about media change. The third group concentrates on analysis of representative cases, and the fourth group focuses on media institutions and professions

This book proposes a groundbreaking exploration into “affective intermediality,” an emerging paradigm that centres on the interplay between media, embodied experiences and material reality. At a time when the scholarly discourse on intermediality is still dominated by researches on literature and mass media, this collection of essays focuses on cinematic intermediality. It delves into the unique position of cinematic images being able to incorporate and to connect to all the other media, as well as being able to generate intense emotions and ethically illuminating experiences. Through investigations into the sensuous inflections of moving images, the volume brings into the spotlight the often overlooked affective potential of intermediality connecting art and life. The chapters investigate a wide array of topics from the representability of feelings and traumatic experiences, from cultural and sensorial entanglements to the gendered gaze and to various affective modalities of getting in touch with the world, including an attunement to non-anthropocentric perspectives. Through in-depth case studies, the book examines how intermedial art practices involving moving images can convey and engender specific sensibilities regarding reality and art. With contributions from both emerging and established scholars, the book highlights films from diverse geo-cultural contexts, also drawing attention to works by and about women. Designed for scholars and students in film and media studies, this book is an essential resource for anyone interested in the affective dimensions of intermediality. It invites readers to engage with critical questions about the emotional and cultural impact of moving images and their intermedial network.
