As the complex societal and technological challenges of the 21st century cannot be addressed by solutions from just one field of expertise, academics are increasingly expected to cross the disciplinary boundaries. 'Interdisciplinary Learning Activities' contains concrete suggestions in the form of examples of learning activities that university teachers can use to teach and foster interdisciplinary skills in graduate and undergraduate students. These skills for interdisciplinary understanding include critical thinking, collaboration, and reflection. Socratic style questioning, Breaking news, The Walt Disney strategy, and The interdisciplinary shuttle are just four examples of the 32 interdisciplinary learning activities for workshops, courses and curricula that are shared by university teachers in this handbook. Incorporating these activities into education will contribute to creating a challenging, engaging and successful learning environment.

Interdisciplinary education has been identified by many educational organisations in Europe and the United States as important for what lies ahead, and it has become a buzzword in some debates about educating for the future. Now, more than ever, higher education is challenged to educate students to see beyond the limits of their own discipline and to come up with innovative integrated solutions for our global challenges. But how do you define interdisciplinarity? How do you measure whether a student has integrated different insights? How do you challenge students to step across disciplinary borders? 'Designing interdisciplinary education' offers guidance and practical advice for university teachers who want to successfully develop, implement and sustain an interdisciplinary approach to their teaching. This book serves as a foothold for interdisciplinary initiatives in higher education, whether it be programmes, minors, courses or extra-curricular activities.

"The purpose of this research project was to examine if co-taught interdisciplinary instruction supports [fourth grade] students in making intertextual connections in reading and art. I investigated one question that guided my research: What are the ways students make connections in co-taught interdisciplinary learning activities? During the review of data, the research question changed. The questions that actually guided my research was: What are the ways teachers help students make connections in co-taught learning activities? Taken from both the research literature and my own research study, I found that students are learning to make intertextual connections through teacher prompts and questioning in co-taught interdisciplinary learning activities. Teachers begin interdisciplinary co-teaching when they need to guide students in learning to connect subjects. Not only did the incorporation of co-taught interdisciplinary learning activities increase student enjoyment, but it also increased the awareness and relevancy that my students attached to the curriculum."--Leaf 26.

We witnessed before the turn of the 21st century that Singapores education undertook a series of curricular innovation and related infrastructure development. The changes included expansion in physical spaces of learning in the classroom, installation of information and communication technologies for multimedia-based learning, large-scale recruitment of graduate teachers, revision of teacher salaries and promotion opportunities, curricular diversity, and research on pedagogies and classroom practices. All children and teachers of the 21st century, regardless of backgrounds, are expected not only to acquire but also to create knowledge. Such changes may to a certain extent stimulate changes in classroom cultures, as well as in childrens experiences in learning. This book captures some of these changes.
