Ecosystems have been present in the fields of economics and management for decades, and in recent years they have experienced rapid development. However, there is still no consensus on the definition of an innovation ecosystem. Using concrete examples, The Innovation Ecosystem as a Source of Value Creation proposes a unique model in order to refine the understanding, functions, advantages and disadvantages of innovation ecosystems. This model is based on both the iterative network and integrated value chain. The network supports the collaboration between actors and favors asset transfers articulated around the innovation process. This book highlights the transfer processes at work in the innovation ecosystem, as well as the roles of the actors in this integrated value chain. It presents how value creation is articulated around knowledge to generate value shared by all of the actors in the innovation ecosystem.

While intense efforts of clarification have been made to distinguish between the concept of system and ecosystem, and between the different forms of ecosystems, very few works have addressed the issues of how these different forms of ecosystems are interacting in a dynamic perspective, or of how the notion of a dynamic ecosystem could emerge from the static frame of a system approach. The five chapters in this volume precisely aim at adding to this literature by highlighting the interplay between different types of innovation systems. A common thread among the five chapters of the book is the recognition of the need to develop new lenses to formally account for adaptative behaviour within clusters, networks, or regional innovation systems using the ecosystem metaphor. The diversity and heterogeneity of agents, the complexity of relationships, and new forms of organisation (underground, middleground, and upperground) are the main characteristics of innovation ecosystems, in contrast to more traditional concepts like clusters or networks. In essence, the five chapters add various complexity dimensions (relationships, knowledge, systems, etc.) to the existing knowledge on ecosystems. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Industry and Innovation.

The term ecosystem in the business context refers to new concepts of collaborative networks that have gained a great deal of attention by scholars and practitioners alike. However, scholars have put forth numerous overlapping concepts, frameworks, and theories whose boundaries are blurry. Addressing this issue, this thesis focuses on the two popular concepts business and innovation ecosystems and aims to differentiate them from one another. First, two seminal ecosystem approaches (ecosystem-as-affiliation and ecosystem-as-structure) are introduced as reference models to analyze the concepts and existing literature reviews are summarized as theoretical background for this thesis. Second, a systematic literature review of 53 articles from the business and management literature depicts the current state of research regarding these two concepts and differentiates them from each other. Despite a plethora of differing and overlapping definitions, the literature review revealed that the concept business ecosystem has mostly been used by researchers who referred to focal firms that collaborated with several actors to produce product(s), whereas the concept innovation ecosystem has mainly been used to refer to networks around focal innovations including the entities that contributed to them. The results of this review imply that scholars should agree on two distinct definitions for business and innovation ecosystems for which suggestions are provided. Alternatively, they could renounce from the use of different ecosystem concepts and exclusively use the term ecosystem in general.

The concept of an 'innovation ecosystem' is increasingly used to describe collectives of heterogeneous, yet complementary organizational actors who jointly create some kind of system-level output, analogous to an 'ecosystem service' that natural ecosystems facilitate, and one that extends beyond the outputs and activities of any individual participant of the ecosystem. Due to its attractiveness and elasticity, the innovation ecosystem concept has been applied to a wide range of phenomena by a variety of scholarly perspectives, alongside with seemingly related concepts such as 'business ecosystems', 'technology ecosystems', 'platform ecosystems', 'entrepreneurial ecosystems', and 'knowledge ecosystems'. This conceptual and application heterogeneity has contributed to conceptual and terminological confusion, which threatens to undermine the utility of the concept in supporting cumulative insight. In this chapter we seek to re-introduce some order into this conceptual heterogeneity by re-viewing how the concept has been applied to variably overlapping phenomena and by highlighting key terminological and conceptual inconsistencies and their sources. We find that conceptual inconsistency on the ecosystem terminology relates to two key dimensions: the 'unit' of analysis and the type of 'ecosystem service'--i.e., the innovative output collectively generated. We then argue that although there is considerable heterogeneity in application, the concept nevertheless offers promise to support insights that are distinctive relative to other concepts that describe collectives of organizations, such as those of 'industry', 'supply chain', and 'network'. We also find that despite extant proliferation, the concept nevertheless describes collectives that are distinctive in terms of participant heterogeneity, the nature of ecosystem outputs, the forms and characteristics of participant interdependence, and the modes of ecosystem governance. Based on our identified dimensions of conceptual heterogeneity, we offer a typology of the different ecosystem concepts, thereby helping re-organize this proliferating domain. The typology consists of three distinct system-level outputs--value propositions, business model innovations, and knowledge--and three research emphases that resonate with alternative 'units' of analysis--community dynamics, output co-generation, and interdependence management. Together, these al-low us to clearly differentiate between the concepts of innovation ecosystems, business ecosystems, platform ecosystems, technology ecosystems, entrepreneurial ecosystems and knowledge ecosystems. We conclude with a consideration of innovation ecosystem dynamics, highlighting the important role digitalization has for ecosystems generally, and reviewing the implications of our model for ecosystem emergence, competition, coevolution and resilience.
