This book presents fundamental concepts and technologies to tackle interoperability between information systems. It details interoperability at the data, service, and process level, and combines theoretical foundations with hands-on presentation of technologies to enable the development of sound and practical integration. Chapter 1 details general interoperability challenges and describes the structure of the book. To start with, Chapter 2 presents technologies for the exchange of data between two selected and highly relevant data formats, i.e., relational databases and XML. Next, Chapter 3 explains concepts for schema matching and mapping and data integration as well as the technological basis for implementing them based on query and transformation languages like XPath and XSLT. Chapter 4 then turns to service interoperability and explains two related technologies – REST and GraphQL – in detail. In Chapter 5, fundamentals for designing process orchestrations at the conceptual level are presented, focusing on how to model process orchestrations and how to verify their correctness and soundness, and showing BPMN as the de facto modeling standard. Chapter 6 then details the concepts and languages for the implementation of process orchestrations, including the presentation of execution languages for process orchestrations that are equipped with a formal semantics, e.g., Workflow Nets, the Refined Process Structure Tree, and CPEE Trees. Subsequently, Chapter 7 focuses on the growing number of distributed, loosely coupled, and often non-interoperable applications through the concepts of enterprise application integration and explains these by an implementation in CPN Tools and by two case studies. Eventually, Chapter 8 is lifting the orchestration and integration concepts and technologies to the choreography level by dealing with the interoperability between different process orchestrations. Chapter 9 concludes the book by featuring success factors for interoperability projects. It also provides a range of open research directions for interoperability such as compliance, sensor fusion, and blockchain technologies. The book is mainly intended as a textbook to be used for developing and teaching courses on interoperability and integration. To this end, it is accompanied by a Web site with additional teaching materials. It also spans a bridge from researchers to graduate students and practitioners by providing a deep understanding on practical interoperability challenges and solutions. The focus here is put on de facto standards and open-source systems and tools to enable interoperability solutions at low cost.

Information Communication and Technology (ICT) utilization has become a backbone of e-government implementation. Six components of information system (hardware, software, people, data, process and network) are combined to deliver information from government to their citizen as part of public services. However, there is an interoperability challenge on e-government implementation related to information system. These systems due to different vendors and their use of different storage types, data formats, languages and middleware platform have become diverse, hence the challenge of interoperability due to heterogeneity of e-government information systems. The study adopted a mixed methods approach where both quantitative and qualitative data was used. The instruments used for data collection included content analysis, interviews and questionnaires. The study used simple random sampling to distribute the questionnaires and purposive sampling technique for the interview schedules. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptively statistics including mean, mode and standard deviation. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Pearson’s correlation was used to find out the relationship between two variables while controlling the effects of one or more additional variables. ANOVA was used to determine whether the model was important in predicting the interoperability of e-government heterogeneous information systems in Kenya. Expert opinion survey was used to validate the proposed interoperability framework.

Level of Information System Interoperability (LISI) is a maturity model and interactive process for assessing and improving interoperability. The heart of the LISI concept is the formulation of a system "profile" which was created through the web- based LISI tool, Inspector 1.0. LISI considers five increasing levels of sophistication with respect to exchanging and sharing information and services. Each higher level represents a demonstrable increase in capabilities over the previous level of system-to- system interaction. The increase is expressed in terms of four attributes: Procedures, Applications, Infrastructure and Data. LISI Inspector leverages the data captured in the Inspector Survey to generate four primary sets of assessment products to be as LISI management tool: Interoperability Profiles , Interoperability Assessment Matrices, Interoperability, Comparison Tables, and Interoperability, System Interface Description. A principal finding of this research is that LISI has potential to improve DOD C4I systems interoperability but the current LISI tool has to be refined. Also, LISI must continue to evolve and adopt the dynamic nature of military operations, system acquisition, and technology improvements so LISI can be useful in contributing to the improvement of DOD C4I systems' interoperability and to achieve the Information Superiority envisioned by Joint Vision 2010.
