Darwinian medicine views host-pathogen interactions through the scope of evolutionary theory. By viewing infectious diseases in this manner, one can examine how both the host and the pathogen respond to selection pressures. The two primary objectives of my dissertation were to investigate the effects of vector transmission on the virulence of pathogens and to examine the evolution of group beneficial traits in a population of antibiotic resistant plasmid bearing bacteria. We found substantial evidence for the effect of vector transmission on the virulence of the Chrysanthemum Stunt Viroid (CSV) (Chapter 3). In this pathogen, transmission by a vector produced both phenotypic (increased symptom severity), and genotypic (point mutations) changes that persisted within lines of plant groups. These changes were also found in a non-vector transmission group but, as expected, the infection did not persist, as the severity of infection eliminated the transmission of the infection from one host to another. These findings suggest that in pathogens, such as the CSV, virulence should increase to a far greater extent when transmission occurs by vectors, as opposed to host-to-host contact. In such cases, the disease-causing agent can evolve to higher levels of virulence, and yet still be transmitted to other individuals (via the inanimate vector). When the transmission occurs by individual-to-individual contact, high levels of virulence may be selected against, as infected individuals may be too ill to transmit the disease. The second objective of my dissertation was to examine the evolution of group beneficial traits in model bacterial populations. We found evidence that populations of antibiotic resistant bacteria can support a stable population of sensitive bacteria in the presence of antibiotics (Chapter 2). Our findings suggest that within-group beneficial traits can be maintained at equilibrium frequencies in mixed genotype (antibiotic sensitive/antibiotic resistant) populations. In a related experiment we also found evidence, in a population containing a single strain of bacteria, that members can lose their plasmid to reduce metabolistic costs and "cheat" off related neighbors that confer antibiotic resistance to the group (Chapter 2).
