In 'Industrial Arts Design,' William H. Varnum skillfully extends the principles of design into the tactile realms of wood, clay, and metalwork. The book, steeped in didactic clarity, serves as an indispensable resource for students and educators alike within the disciplines of high school and higher education settings, particularly in the practical engagement of industrial arts. Varnum's writing navigates through the complexities of material-specific design with a literary finesse that makes the intricate process accessible. With a focus on adaptability in bench and cabinet work for wood, the text integrates pedagogical methods with hands-on application, addressing a gap in educational resources by providing a specialized approach to the design for aspiring craftspeople and industrial artists. William H. Varnum, an authority on industrial arts, has composed 'Industrial Arts Design' with a depth of knowledge presumably drawn from extensive experience in the field. The impetus behind the book could be Varnum's recognition of the schism between theoretical design principles and their practical execution in vocational training. His expertise is evident in the methodical breakdown of design concepts tailored for the industrial arts, suggesting that Varnum's professional background has significantly influenced his endeavor to create a comprehensive guide for the intersection of design theory and craft practice. 'Recommended for its precision and practicality, 'Industrial Arts Design' is a seminal text for anyone involved in the pedagogy or practice of crafting with wood, clay, and metals. Varnum's insightful approach to industrial design educates without overwhelming, making the book an essential reference for the classroom and beyond. Students will find it an invaluable companion in their design journey, while teachers will appreciate its efficacy as a tool for instruction. 'Industrial Arts Design' is indeed a treasure trove of applied knowledge for the aspiring designer and craftsman emboldened to turn raw materials into works of functional art.

Originally published in 1916 when the Arts & Crafts movement was in its heyday, this is a virtual textbook of materials, color, techniques, and designs. Arts & Crafts Design is a practical guide to the creation of high-quality, high-style furnishings through the industrial arts. "In this relativistic age in which de gustilrie non disputandum est (it is undisputed that each person has their own sense of taste), it is refreshing to look back to the early twentieth century when at least a few people were certain that there are universal rules for good art and also that they had themselves mastered these precepts and could pass them on to a society that loved commonly held values. William H. Varnum was one of those people. He offers here a textbook that will, if followed, allow students to 'directly apply well-recognized principles of design to specific materials and problems.' No situation esthetics here. In fact, he followed these principles in designing the logos representing his tools and ratio system on the cover of his book. "The publisher of this new edition has added a useful foreword and substitued the title Arts and Crafts Design for the original (1916) Industrial Arts Design, an appropriate modification since the term "industrial" suggests factory production whereas Varnum referred to objects that today we call "Craftsman"--Rookwood pottery, Stickley furniture, Jarvie candlesticks, etc. A delightful touch is that Varnum included pictures of these objects alongside the principles by which he believed they were designed. Varnum's book offers an enlightening, if somewhat technical, insight into thinking about design before World War I. There is no doubt that the Arts and Crafts period during which the principles of simple beauty married so neatly with function can be better understood and appreciated today through Varnum's perceptions."
