This collection of essays is designed to honour the work of Lotte Hellinga on her retirement from the British Library, where she was for many years Head of the Incunable Section. Scholars from eight countries range widely over the field of 15th-century printed books, writing on such topics as the shape of early type; authorship, ownership and the building up of collections of incunabula; the binding and decoration of books from the presses of England, the Low Countries and Italy; the earliest trade in printed books; and the vicissitudes of the Gutenberg Bible in the sales rooms. The book is illustrated and contains an appreciation of Dr Hellinga's career and a list of her publications.

The Bodleian's incunable catalogue describes the Library's fifteenth-century western printed books to the same standards expected in the best modern catalogues of medieval manuscripts. It records and identifies all texts contained in each volume, and the detailed analysis of the textual content is an innovative feature. Further information about authors, editors, translators, and dedicatees is given in an extensive index of names, complete with biographical and other information; this index will be of interest to textural scholars from the classical period to the renaissance. The detailed descriptions of the copy-specific features of each book (the binding, hand-decoration and hand-finishing, marginalia, and provenance) form another important contribution to scholarship. The provenance index will be of great value to all those interested in the history of the book from the 1450s to the present day.

Incunabula of the Low Countries (ILC) is a census of fifteenth-century books printed in the area of the present-day Netherlands and Belgium. It lists 2,229 editions in more than 14,300 copies preserved in hundreds of libraries, museums, and archives all over the world, but mainly in Europe and the USA. The entries for this census have been derived from the Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (ISTC), the database of incunabula compiled at the British Library. They combine research on Low Countries incunabula carried out by Gerard van Thienen, curator at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague, with data assembled by ISTC form other sources. ISTC entries were further edited, indexed and prepared for publication by John Goldfinch at the British Library. Campbell's Annales of 1874, the first bibliography of incunabula printed in the Low Countries with 1794 entries, was followed by a number of supplements of increasing complexity, the most extensive being published by M.E. Kronenberg in 1956. All the former additions and emendations, together with additions not otherwise listed before are now brought together and included in one sequence in ILC.

Incunabula And Their Readers written by Kristian Jensen and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Business & Economics categories.

The contributions to this volume address important issues about books and their users in the 15th century. A unifying theme is the complex relationships between producers - be they authors, printers or decorators - the economic conditions of book distribution, and the requirements of readers or other users of books. Two contributions focus on technical aspects of the production of books, essential for our understanding of how texts met their readers. Such engaged and informed openness towards other disciplines is necessary for students of books to understand why the European invention of printing was successful - of why books became the first successful mechanically mass-produced marketable product.
