Imperial Russian Foreign Policy aims to demythologise a field hitherto dominated by suspicions of diabolical cunning, inscrutable motives, and international plots using unseen forces of the gigantic, fear-inspiring empire of the tsar. The contributors, leading historians from both Russia and the West, examine Imperial foreign policy from its origins to the October Revolution, revealing a policy that, as in other countries, had a complex of motives - commerce, nationalism, the interests of various social groups - but an unusual origin, coming almost exclusively from the entourage of the tsar. The work is based largely on original research in Soviet archives, which only became possible after Soviet glasnost.

The Sources Of Russian Foreign Policy Assertiveness written by Angela Borozna and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with categories.
'Borozna's book skilfully applies the concept of strategic culture which is normally investigated in Western contexts to the case of Russia. It provides an innovative and insightful way of understanding the sources and pathways of the gradual development of Russian assertiveness in the world order following the end of the Cold War. In a very accessible style, among many things, the book presents a wealth of empirical observations into the complexity that underpins Russia's foreign policy.' -Cristian Nitoiu, Lecturer in Diplomacy and International Governance, Loughborough University London, UK This book explores the sources of Russia's foreign policy conduct since the end of the Cold War. It is aimed at those interested in Russian foreign policy, international security, and diplomacy. The book embraces an eclectic approach by applying insights from several strands of IR theory, exploring both international and domestic sources. The author argues that Russian foreign policy is influenced by the country's strategic culture, which exhibits some persistent elements inherited from Russia's imperial past and from Soviet times. The challenges to Russia's security interests from Western policies led to an increase in Russian foreign policy assertiveness. As a result, Russia is becoming more committed to Eurasian integration and nurturing relations with China. This book further argues that Russia's relations with the post-Soviet states have been and will remain a priority of its foreign relations and, therefore, Russia is likely to continue challenging any Western interference in these states. The author maintains that geoeconomics and the protection of overseas economic interests are becoming more prominent in Russia's foreign policy calculus. The role of domestic factors in the country's foreign policy, such as authoritarianism, regime vulnerability, and the role of political factions, is also examined. Angela Borozna holds a Ph.D. in political science from the Graduate Center, City University of New York, USA, and a Master's degree in finance from the George Washington University, USA. She previously worked for several finance companies in London, New York, and San Francisco.

Many scholars and analysts see Russian nationalism as a dangerous force, but is widespread concern about the malevolent effects of Russian nationalism-especially on foreign policy-justified? What is the record of nation-building in Russia, and how did nationalism evolve in the multiethnic, Russian empire? What variants of nationalist ideology have been propagated in Russia, and what are their benign or aggressive implications for foreign policy? What triggers the articulation of aggressive nationalism, and what factors facilitate its influence on Russian foreign policy? What Western actions might help or hinder the impact of aggressive nationalism on Russian international behavior? This thoughtful book answers these questions by exploring the range of nationalist ideas that have been propagated in Russia since 1856. Drawing on a wide range of archival documents and unparalleled interview material from the post-Soviet period, Astrid S. Tuminez analyzes two cases-Russian panslavism in 1856-1878 and great power nationalism in 1905-1914-when aggressive nationalist ideas clearly influenced Russian foreign policy and contributed to decisions to go to war. Yet not all forms of nationalism have been malevolent, and the author assesses competing nationalist ideologies in the post-Soviet period to clarify the conditions under which a particularly belligerent nationalism could flourish and influence Russian international behavior. With its implications for U.S.–Russian relations, this study will be essential reading for policymakers and Russia scholars alike.
