The liver is an exceptionally complex and diverse organ that functions both as an exocrine and an endocrine gland. It secretes bile, which contains many con stituents in addition to bile salts, and it synthesizes and releases many substances in response to the body's demands, including prohormones, albumin, clotting factors, glucose, fatty acids, and various lipoproteins. It has a dual blood supply providing a rich mixture of nutrients and other absorbed substances via the portal vein and oxygen-rich blood via the hepatic artery. This functional heterogeneity is accompanied by cellular heterogeneity. The liver contains many cell types including hepatic parachymal cells, Kiipffer cells, Ito cells, and endothelial cells. The most abundant cell type, the parenchymal cells, are biochemically and structurally heterogeneous. The cells in the oxygen-rich areas of the portal triad appear more dependent on oxidative metabolism, whereas those around the central vein (pericentral, perivenous, or centrolobular areas) are more dependent upon an anaerobic mechanism. Throughout this volume the latter three terms are used synonymously by various authors to indicate the five to eight layers of cells radiating from the central vein. Structural and metabolic heterogeneity of hepatic parenchymal cells has been demonstrated by a variety of approaches, including histochemical, ultra structural, and ultramicrobiochemical studies. This microheterogeneity is linked to the physiological functions of the liver and its response to injurious substances.

27th International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry is a collection of lectures presented at the 27th Congress of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, held in Helsinki, Finland, on August 27-31, 1979. The event covers a wide range of topics relating to chemistry, including biotechnology and bioengineering; trace element analysis; modern methods in clinical chemistry; and analysis and structure of cell membrane carbohydrates. Chemometrics is also discussed, along with the chemistry and technology of natural polymers and their degradation products. This book consists of 36 chapters and opens with an assessment of prospects for biotechnology amid the resource problems facing industrialized countries. The reader is then introduced to the main principles of screening effective anticancer drugs based on the methods and concepts of biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics; the fundamental principles involved in steroid immunoassay for clinical chemistry applications; fractionation and determination of trace elements in plants, soils, and sediments; and trace metal analysis in exploration geochemistry. The following chapters explore clinical applications of steroid hormone receptor assays; asparagine-linked sugar chains of glycoproteins; chemistry and technology of starch; and use of high-performance liquid chromatography in the analysis of red blood cell glycolipids. This monograph will be a valuable source of information for practitioners and research workers in the field of pure and applied chemistry.

Dermatopathology Of Tropical Diseases written by Omar P Sangüeza and has been published by JP Medical Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-15 with Medical categories.

The majority of tropical diseases manifest themselves through the skin, and while many can be diagnosed on physical examination, dermatopathologic results are often of critical importance to the diagnostic process. However, general dermatopathology texts lack images of diseases endemic in the developing world; they also lack clinical correlates linking the pathology to the clinical entity. This is a problem, because greater movement between countries where tropical diseases are prevalent and Europe, North America and other developed nations makes it essential for physicians to be able to recognize, diagnose and treat these diseases. Dermatopathology of Tropical Diseases covers the pathology and clinical correlations of the most important tropical diseases. Each entity is described using brief text that summarises its epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical features. The diagnostic process is then described and illustrated using both clinical and histopathologic images. Wherever possible, different examples are shown of the same disease, in order to illustrate as wide a variety of presentations as possible. Extensively illustrated with almost 600 photographs, Dermatopathology of Tropical Diseases is an invaluable resource for dermatopathologists, pathologists and dermatologists based in the developing world as well as those in developed countries who see tropical diseases in returned travellers and immigrant populations. Key features Includes chapters on all major tropical diseases, with both clinical and histopathological images provided for each entity, allowing the reader to correlate pathological characteristics with the clinical presentation of each disease Wherever possible, different examples of the same disease are shown, to illustrate the variety of presentations Lavishly illustrated with almost 600 colour photographs

This book primarily summarizes the imaging characteristics and theory of parasitic disease, offering a clinical guide and practical approach to understanding, preventing and diagnosing parasitic disease. Through imaging diagnosis and cross-research of imaging with autopsy and pathology, it highlights the chief characteristics and evolution of imaging, which provides primary scientific data for the understanding and research of parasitic disease. Divided into 9 chapters, this volume is fully illustrated with DR, CT and MRI images of different kinds of parasitic diseases, providing a valuable resource for radiologists in this field.
