The global movement of millions of people seeking better lives or refuge from persecution has given debate in Australia over immigration and multiculturalism a new urgency. What once seemed a settled policy framework accepted by most political shades of opinion is now being widely questioned again. Does Australia need more immigrants or have we reached the limits of social, political and environmental tolerance? Should immigrants and refugees adopt the customs and traditions of the host country or create cultural enclaves within it? Does multiculturalism threaten national identity and is this desirable or not? Has our experiment with multiculturalism been a success and should it continue? In this book, some leading Australians debate these issues with British and American experts in the field. Essays by: Geoffrey Blainey, John OSullivan, Owen Harries, Philip Ruddock, John Menadue, Lance Morrow, Bob Birrell, Marilyn Halter, Andrew Roberts, Robert Rowthorn and Melanie Phillips.

This edited volume focuses on how multiculturalism, as statecraft, has had both intended and unintended consequences on Singapore's various ethnic communities. The contributing authors address and update contemporary issues and developments in the practice of multiculturalism in Singapore by interfacing the practice of multiculturalism over two critical periods, the colonial and the global. The coverage of the first period examines the colonial origins and conception of multiculturalism and the post-colonial application of multiculturalism as a project of the nation and its consequences for the Tamil Muslim, Ceylon-Tamil, and Malay communities. The content on the second period addresses immigration in the context of globalization with the arrival of new immigrants from South and East Asia, who pose a challenge to the concept and practice of multiculturalism in Singapore. For both periods, the contributors examine how the old migrants have attempted to come to terms with living in a multicultural society that has been constructed in the image of the state, and how the new migrants will reshape that society in the course of their ongoing politics of identity.

Scandinavian societies have historically, and problematically, been understood as homogenous, when in fact they have a long history of ethnic and cultural pluralism due to colonialism and territorial conquest. Amid global tensions around border security and refugee crises, these powerful conversations with nineteen scholars about the past, present, and future of a region in transition capture the current cultural moment.

From international press coverage of the French government’s attempt to prevent Muslims from wearing headscarves to terrorist attacks in Madrid and the United States, questions of cultural identity and pluralism are at the center of the world’s most urgent events and debates. Presenting an unprecedented wealth of empirical research garnered during ten years of a cross-cultural project, Contested Citizenship addresses these fundamental issues by comparing collective actions by migrants, xenophobes, and antiracists in Germany, Britain, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Revealing striking cross-national differences in how immigration and diversity are contended by different national governments, these authors find that how citizenship is constructed is the key variable defining the experience of Europe’s immigrant populations. Contested Citizenship provides nuanced policy recommendations and challenges the truism that multiculturalism is always good for immigrants. Even in an age of European integration and globalization, the state remains a critical actor in determining what points of view are sensible and realistic—and legitimate—in society. Ruud Koopmans is professor of sociology at Free University, Amsterdam. Paul Statham is reader in political communications at the University of Leeds. Marco Giugni is a researcher and teacher of political science at the University of Geneva. Florence Passy is assistant professor of political science at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.

This volume presents a number of points of view both from Europe and North America by academic, religious, and political authors from a variety of cultures, all with a very different perspective on whether multiculturalism is a valid answer to ensuring harmony in our societies.
