Images: A Reader provides a key resource for students, academics, practitioners and other readers engaged in the critical, theoretical, and practical study of images. The Reader is concerned with the notion of the ‘image’ in all its theoretical, critical and practical contexts, uses and history. It provides a map of the differences and similarities between the various disciplinary approaches to images, breaking the ground for a new interdisciplinary study of images, in the arts and humanities and beyond. The selection of over 80 key readings, across the domains of philosophy, art, literature, science, critical theory and cultural studies tells the story of images through intellectual history from the Bible to the present. By including both well-established writings and more recent, innovative research, the Reader outlines crucial developments in contemporary discourses about images.

The Book Of Revelation And The Visual Culture Of Asia Minor written by Andrew R. Guffey and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-10 with Religion categories.

The images in the book of Revelation confound even the most seasoned of interpreters. In this book, Andrew R. Guffey argues that part of the confusion stems from the fact that the book of Revelation was first and foremost a work to be “seen,” but that few interpreters address the visuality of the book. The Book of Revelation and the Visual Culture of Asia Minor describes a connection between rhetorical discussions of ekphrasis, visual culture, and John’s images—a “concurrence of images”— using theory and thick historical description. Guffey’s analysis situates the text and its rhetorical performativity in the context of ancient visual and rhetorical culture, arguing that Revelation is not merely a work of literary craft, but also of visual culture.

The Uses Of Images written by E.H. Gombrich and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-01-26 with Art categories.

In this new volume - the tenth in the series of his collected essays - Professor Gombrich returns to themes that have long preoccupied him in his study of visual imagery of all kinds. Central to these essays is a consuming interest in the functions of images, and how these functions - and the images - change over time. In wide-ranging studies of both 'high' and 'low' art, from fresco painting, altar painting, the International Gothic Style and outdoor sculpture to doodles, pictorial instructions, caricature and political propaganda, Gombrich discusses the role of supply and demand, competition and display, the 'ecology' of images and the idea of 'feedback' in the interplay of means and ends, as developing skills in turn stimulate new demands. He explores further aaspects of the uses of images in his essays on the hanging of pictures and on the use (or misuse) of images as historical evidence.
