This open access Springer Brief provides a systematic analysis of current trends and requirements in the areas of knowledge and competence in the context of the project “(A) Higher Education Digital (AHEAD)—International Horizon Scanning / Trend Analysis on Digital Higher Education.” It examines the latest developments in learning theory, didactics, and digital-education technology in connection with an increasingly digitized higher education landscape. In turn, this analysis forms the basis for envisioning higher education in 2030. Here, four learning pathways are developed to provide a glimpse of higher education in 2030: Tamagotchi, a closed ecosystem that is built around individual students who enter the university soon after secondary education; Jenga, in which universities offer a solid foundation of knowledge to build on in later phases; Lego, where the course of study is not a monolithic unit, but consists of individually combined modules of different sizes; and Transformer, where students have already acquired their own professional identities and life experiences, which they integrate into their studies. In addition, innovative practice cases are presented to illustrate each learning path.

Dedication This book is dedicated to pioneers of change and the champions of tomorrow, to educators who inspire beyond boundaries, to learners who thirst for growth in every experience, to all who are committed to the transformative journey of learning, to those who embrace innovation with courage, empathy, and purpose, to everyone who believes that by empowering minds, we illuminate the future, and to visionaries who believe that education is not just a pathway but a powerful instrument for shaping a better world.. May our collective efforts build a brighter, inclusive, and sustainable world through education. Foreword we approach the year 2030, the landscape of education is at a transformative crossroads. Today’s world is advancing at an unprecedented pace, driven by technological innovation, global interconnectedness, and an urgent call for sustainability. Education must evolve to meet these demands; not through minor adjustments, but by reimagining and restructuring the very core of teaching and learning itself. With Education 2030: Preparing for the Future of Learning, our aim to create not only a blueprint for adaptation but a vision for revolutionizing the educational experience. This book is more than a resource; rather, it’s a strategic invitation to educators, policymakers, students, and institutions worldwide to participate in a critical dialogue on the future of education. Each chapter explores crucial aspects of modern education; from the integration of artificial intelligence and personalized teaching and learning to the vital importance of fostering emotional intelligence and ethical consciousness in young minds. We examine, in the book, how immersive technologies, sustainability initiatives, and cross- disciplinary strategies will reshape teaching and learning environments and empower learners of all ages and backgrounds. We hereby share a profound commitment to lifelong teaching and learning, inclusivity, and innovation, which are essential to preparing the next generation for a complex and interconnected world. Through this work, we encourage you to envision a future where education is as dynamic, diverse, and adaptable as the world we are preparing students to enter. May this book serves as a guide and a catalyst for all who are passionate about creating an education system that not only keeps pace with change but lead it. Welcome to the journey of building Education 2030.
