Get the comprehensive guide to the sustainable design of schools. The elementary and secondary school buildings and campuses built today are the schools of the future. Sustainable School Architecture is a guide to the planning, architecture, and design of schools that are healthy, stimulating, and will conserve energy and resources. Written with the needs of architects, construction professionals, educators, and school administration in mind, the book provides a road map for sustainable planning, design, construction, and operations. By its very nature, a school is often the centerpiece of its community and, therefore, well positioned to take the lead in influencing environmental awareness. Building on this point, Sustainable School Architecture shows how eco-friendly practices for school construction can create an environment that young students will emulate and carry into the world. Written by experts on sustainable school design, this book: Focuses on the links between best sustainable practices and the specific needs of educational institutions. Has nineteen international case studies of the best contemporary sustainable schools located in urban, suburban, and rural communities in temperate, tropical, and extreme climate zones. Contains valuable information on the California Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating system. Serves as a resource for incremental modernization and operation strategies as well as comprehensive transformation. Offers tips on running an integrated, community-based design process with support information on the materials and systems of the sustainable school. Includes contributions by experts on approaches to the sites, systems, maintenance, and operation of sustainable schools. With a practical overview of how sustainability can be achieved in new and existing schools, and how to maintain this momentum in the years ahead, this important book provides architects with detailed guidance for designing healthier learning environments to help usher in a more promising future.

In order to achieve the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, sustainable education in tropical developing regions will play a significant role with regard to the rapid growth in population, economy, and climate problems in these regions. The green school movement has been developing in the West for a few decades. The movement has vital influence in leading the global sustainable education system with their visions, themes, teaching curriculum, and green campus design. However, the promotion of green schools in tropical regions faces barriers due to a lack of awareness, and a regional poor education development. This research is aiming to generate design strategies for green schools in tropical developing regions based on theoretical and practical perspectives. In order to achieve this aim, a theoretical design framework will be built based on a summary of checklists from world-leading green school networks, presenting the up-to-date requirements of green schools, to a global standard. This theoretical framework is to examine and analyse green school practices from tropical developing regions. Previous award-winning green schools will be analysed under this summary of checklists. This process is to illustrate how much “green” they have achieved and to investigate their unique design solutions which can be a complement in building the design strategies for these regions. Two schools have achieved most of the requirements from the checklists. However, the result shows that some of the themes are poorly achieved and some of them have a very high rate of feasibility. Advanced solutions for dealing with energy resources, water treatment, sustainable land, school integration, and waste treatments have been applied in these schools at low cost and with simple maintenance. The benefits from green school practices in tropical developing regions play a significant role in these regions with their contribution of advanced design solutions. An updated design strategy based on theoretical and practical perspectives will be built at the end of the research as a primary design guide. This strategy is aiming to lead new schools from tropical developing regions towards becoming green learning facilities.

Designing The Sustainable School written by Alan Ford and has been published by Images Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Architecture categories.

Having designed more than 75 K-12 school projects, and with a long-standing commitment to sustainability and a passion for architecture, Alan Ford is perfectly positioned to present this illuminating collection of sustainable school projects from around the world. Designing the Sustainable School is a compendium of ideas illustrating how some very talented architects and committed facility planners are meeting the challenge of creating better schools for the 21st century. They are creating schools that are eco-friendly, embody high-performance design principles, are rich in architectural character, and enhance the health and well-being of students and teachers. The projects represent a wide range of design solutions, aesthetics, location, and scale, ranging in size from the Aga Khan Award-winning three-room schoolhouse in Burkina Faso by Diebedo Francis Kere, to the 2500-student, 260,000-square-foot high school in Santa Ana, California by LPA Architects. Each of the 45 featured projects is presented with an overview of the components of the high-performance "tool kit" employed by architects to achieve sustainable design goals. Collectively, these demonstrate the breadth of tools that today's architects can employ to build a sustainable future for our children.

The escalating interdependecy of nations drives global geopolitics to shift ever more quickly. Societies seem unable to control any change that affects their cities, whether positively or negatively. Challenges are global, but solutions need to be implemented locally. How can architectural research contribute to the future of our changing society? How has it contributed in the past? The theme of the 10th EAAE/ARCC International Conference, “Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges”, was set to address these questions. This book, Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges, includes reviewed papers presented in June 2016, at the 10th EAAE/ARCC International Conference, which was held at the facilities of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon. The papers have been further divided into the following five sub-themes: a Changing Society; In Transit – Global Migration; Renaturalization of the City; Emerging Fields of Architectural Practice; and Research on Architectural Education. The EAAE/ARCC International Conference, held under the aegis of the EAAE and of the ARCC, is a conference organized every other year, in collaboration with one of the member schools/ universities of those associations, alternatively in North America or in Europe.

It is generally agreed upon that environmental education has an important place in 21st century schools, as the need to educate the current and future generations of young people on how to live in a sustainable way grows increasingly urgent. Within the framework of formal education in Ontario, efforts to prepare students to be environmentally responsible citizens has mainly concentrated on the integration of sustainability concepts into the curriculum. This thesis argues that equal attention should be given to integrating sustainability concepts into the physical environment of the school - the education facility itself - as it has the potential to be not merely the place where environmental education is taught but be the source of environmental education. This thesis takes the theoretical position proposed by environmental educator David Orr that architecture is a source of pedagogical instruction.[1] The power buildings have to teach people, can be harnessed to design a building that can be utilized to foster sustainability behaviour. Schools' role in society in preparing children for the future gives an educational building the unique advantage of teaching people to be sustainable-minded when they're at an impressionable age. The project presented takes the form of a design proposal for a green school for K-8 students, located on a case study site in Milton, Ontario. A green school is an emerging architectural type, the term for which was developed by the Centre for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council and is used to describe schools that advance sustainability by aspiring to reduce their environmental footprint, improve the wellbeing and performance of its students and staff, and ultimately producing graduates who are ecoliterate.[2] The design proposal concentrates on achieving these three goals through the architecture of the proposed education facility, through a design that demonstrates the environmental awareness it promotes. Following the long-held tradition of the demonstration project, this thesis builds on strategies developed from a precedent study of existing environmental education centres in the same climatic region. These organizations consider their building an integral part in the fulfillment of their mission to educate the public on sustainability, using it as a demonstration tool. The climatic region of southern Ontario will inform key aspects of the design - the orientation, massing, form and materiality - as true sustainability responds to the specific conditions of the site. The design takes advantage of positioning a school on an ecologically-rich landscape to strengthen students' sense of connection with nature. The project scope encompasses the spatial design, materiality, structure, building systems and operations, the landscape and site design, and each of these aspects were considered with their potential for pedagogy. The design addresses these aspects of the built environment across different scales, presenting within the school a variety of learning space types whose environmental design has been fine-tuned to suit their function and climate.
