What better way to learn about life than working in a cemetery? This is exactly what happens to the main character, Martin Stevenson, in Grave Matters. Martin alludes to the lost year he has left behind when he stumbles into employment as a grounds-keeper in a cemetery in the middle of Kansas. There, he secretly takes up permanent residence camping in an obscure corner of the cemetery. The reader sees life through Martins eyes as he digs out from his past and interacts with the quirky characters he works with. Martin serves as a muse as the reader learns lessons of life from the stories and experiences told by his co-workers. Through these lessons, Martin comes to find some of the answers about life he has been searching for through the experiences framed by death. Each chapter is an episode that takes place in the cemetery, spotlighting each employee and their unique experiences. In the end, both Martin and the reader come to realize that a persons identity and life are not shaped by what we appear to be nor by the compartments that constrain us, but by how we live our lives.

In the morbidly fascinating tradition of Stiff, Grave Matters follows families who found in "green" burial a more natural, more economic, and ultimately more meaningful alternative to the tired and toxic send-off on offer at the local funeral parlor. Eschewing chemical embalming and fancy caskets, elaborate and costly funerals, the families followed in Grave Matters have embraced a range of natural options, new and old, that are redefining a better American way of death. Environmental journalist Mark Harris examines this new green burial underground, leading you into natural cemeteries and domestic graveyards, taking you aboard boats from which ashes and memorial "reef balls" are cast into the sea. He follows a family that conducts a home funeral, one that delivers a loved one to the crematory, and another that hires a carpenter to build a pine coffin. Harris details the embalming process and the environmental aftermath of the standard funeral. He also traces the history of burial in America, from frontier cemeteries to the billion-dollar business it is today, reporting on real families who opted for more simple, natural returns. For readers who want to follow the examples of these families and, literally, give back from the grave, appendices detail everything you need to know, from exact costs and laws to natural burial providers and their contact information.

Lady Kiera Darby and Sebastian Gage investigate a macabre murderer in this historical mystery from the author of Mortal Arts. Scotland, 1830. Following the death of her dear friend, Lady Kiera Darby is in need of a safe haven. Returning to her childhood home, Kiera hopes her beloved brother Trevor and the merriment of the Hogmanay Ball will distract her. But when a caretaker is murdered and a grave is disturbed at nearby Dryburgh Abbey, Kiera is once more thrust into the cold grasp of death. While Kiera knows that aiding in another inquiry will only further tarnish her reputation, her knowledge of anatomy could make the difference in solving the case. But agreeing to investigate means Kiera must deal with the complicated emotions aroused in her by inquiry agent Sebastian Gage. When Gage arrives, he reveals that the incident at the Abbey was not the first—some fiend is digging up old bones and holding them for ransom. Now Kiera and Gage must catch the grave robber and put the case to rest…before another victim winds up six feet under.

Thomas Graves is no stranger to immortality, but becoming a vampire is something else entirely. Still adjusting to his new existence, Thomas receives a letter from the only woman he ever promised his heart: XiXi, a deadly flame from his 17th-century pirate days. Gravely wounded by a supernatural hunter, she intends to collect on that promise—literally. But XiXi isn’t the only ghost from the past demanding his attention. A summons from Isadore Elysion, the Graves family’s estranged vampire patron, draws Thomas to Venice, the very city where XiXi now resides. At the Palazzo di Elisio, Isadore’s twin sister, Isadora, is breaking mirrors and stirring from beyond the veil. But is she seeking revenge, or simply longing to reclaim her long-abandoned body? As Carnival looms, chaos mounts. Thomas must keep his brother Gabriel from projecting a century-old obsession in a new and entirely more dangerous direction, prevent an unjustified staking, oversee a daring supernatural heart transplant, and still finish working on his latest album with Monstrous Pact—all while keeping both his heart and his spine intact. Old promises, dangerous affections, and blood-bound loyalties collide in the lush and haunting fifth installment of The Thornhill Vampire Chronicles. Amid masks, music, and rising tensions, one question echoes through the canals of Venice: What is a promise worth, when eternity is on the line?

Continuation of the reference work that originated with Robert Dodsley, written and published each year, which records and analyzes the year’s major events, developments and trends in Great Britain and throughout the world. From the 1920s volumes of The Annual Register took the essential shape in which they have continued ever since, opening with the history of Britain, then a section on foreign history covering each country or region in turn. Following these are the chronicle of events, brief retrospectives on the year’s cultural and economic developments, a short selection of documents, and obituaries of eminent persons who died in the year.
