A dynamic chapter of church history is now being written in Asia. But the theological inflections at its heart are not well understood by outsiders. Simon Chan explores Asian Christianity at its grassroots, sustaining level and finds a vibrant, implicit theology that is authentically Asian. More than a survey, this is a serious and constructive contribution to Asian theology.

Today, the need for a holistic grassroots theology becomes more urgent as Filipino Christians search for a truly Filipino faith-based understanding of Philippine social problems. Apparently, in three decades, liberation theologians have been preoccupied with social and political changes, however, many Filipino Christians are increasingly polarized over whether liberation theologies or theology of struggle is biblical or unbiblical. On the other hand, Filipino Pentecostalism/Charismatic movements have often been accused of being withdrawn from political and social concerns, and have been focused on numerical growth and church planting in the Southeast Asian region, especially in the Philippines. Despite this, however, Singaporean theologian Simon Chan argues that Asian Pentecostal movements attracted people that define their ethnographic concerns (healing, financial breakthrough, deliverance from evil spirits) than liberation theologies (elitist theologies) do. This book attempts to answer the following questions: How relevant and accurate is Simon Chan's notion of 'grassroots Asian theology' in the Philippine context? What is Chan's notion of "ecclesial experience" as a concrete form of grassroots Asian Theology? What might be useful to take into consideration to do a grassroots theology in the light of Philippine context? What possibilities arise from the comparison of Simon Chan, Wonsuk Ma, and Eleazar Fernandez offer in the broader context of doing a grassroots Filipino Pentecostal public theology? In short, this book evaluates the accuracy, relevancy, and critique of Chan's notion of grassroots Asian theology (ecclesial experience) in the light of two representative theologians; Wonsuk Ma, a charismatic/Pentecostal theologian, and Eleazar Fernandez, a Filipino liberation theologian.

Asian Christian Theology provides a survey of contextually reflective, robustly evangelical theology for students to engage with the core doctrines of Christianity and their outworking in different cultures across Asia. The contributors of the chapters come from all corners of Asia to systematically examine traditional doctrinal themes and contemporary concerns for the Asian church. Ideal for use as a companion textbook in Asian seminaries and institutions, this book will also provide excellent further reading for those outside of Asia seeking global theological perspectives, and for those in contexts of significant Asian diaspora. Many excellent books surveying theology exist, but this book is a major step forward for students and scholars seeking to understand the dynamic environment of evangelical theology in Asia.

The term “public theology” was introduced by Martin E. Marty in a 1974 article. Since then, scholarly discussions on public theology have become more popular in academic circles. This book, however, is about the invitation for moving beyond the academy. It provides two reasons for doing so. First, an overtly academic public theology is in crisis today. Although public theology may be flourishing in the academy, its relevance for real life is limited. Second, there is the “ecclesial flourishing” among grassroots Christian communities across Asia who witness to their lived faith in public and hidden life. Their voices are largely unheard due to the gaps between the academy and the church. This volume argues that we should consider their voices as key sources for developing a relevant lived Asian public theology. The author makes the case for reimagining the paradigm shifts in lived Asian public theology of religions and for bridging the unhappy gaps between the academic and grassroots voices.

This book is a study of three of Asia's most respected contemporary theologians - Kosuke Koyoma, Choan-Seng Song, and Aloysius Pieris. It gives an introduction to Asian Buddhism and the Christian dialogue with Buddhists in Asia. Furthermore, it examines the work of each theologian in detail, looking at the method and content of their dialogue, and outlining its impact upon their respective theologies. The book provides a critique of their dialogue and engages with the theological issues that have emerged. In areas such as religious identity, theological method and liberation theology it is shown that their conversation with Buddhism contributes to the development of a genuinely Asian theology, and moreover raises important challenges to the worldwide theological community, churches and to those engaged in interreligious dialogue.
