Handbook Of Globalization And The Environment written by Khi V. Thai and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-02-05 with Political Science categories.

Proponents of globalization argue that it protects the global environment from degradation and promotes worldwide sustainable economic growth while opponents argue the exact opposite. Examining the local, national, and international impacts of globalization, the Handbook of Globalization and the Environment explores strategies and solutions that support healthy economic growth, protect the environment, and create a more equitable world. The book sets the stage with coverage of global environmental issues and policies. It explores international sustainable development, the evolution of global warming policy, transborder air pollution, desertification, space and the global environment, and human right to water. Building on this foundation, the editors discuss global environmental organizations and institutions with coverage of the UN's role in globalization, the trade-environment nexus, the emergence of NGOs, and an analysis of the state of global environmental knowledge and awareness from an international and comparative perspective. Emphasizing the effects of increasingly integrated global economy on the environment and society, the book examines environmental management and accountability. It addresses green procurement, provides an overview of U.S. environmental regulation and the current range of voluntary and mandatory pollution prevention mechanisms in use, explores a two-pronged approach to establishing a sustainable procurement model, and examines a collaborative community-based approach to environmental regulatory compliance. The book concludes with an analysis of controversial issues, such as eco-terrorism, North-South disputes, environmental justice, the promotion of economic growth through globalization in less developed countries, and the ability of scientists to communicate ideas so that policy makers can use science in decision making.

This title was first published in 2003. Based on a blend of knowledge and perspectives from a variety of disciplines this volume examines the human-environment interaction in Africa, with a focus on the economic, social and political processes that generate environmental change and problems in this region. Currently there are controversies over and challenges to such concepts and issues as environment-human relationships, ecological resilience, decertification, sustainable development, globalization and North-South dialogue. This book draws upon past and present research findings to discuss these issues. It features: an examination of the characteristics, processes and patterns of environmental crises; an analysis of the principal issues and challenges facing policy makers and implementers; and the promotion of awareness of theoretical, empirical and comparative research. The volume not only seeks to answer some of the old questions, but also open up new ones for further discussion.

New Growth And Poverty Alleviation Strategies For Africa written by Karl Wohlmuth and has been published by LIT Verlag Münster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Business & Economics categories.

Volume XIII analyses the New Growth and Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Africa - International and Regional Perspectives. Country cases in Africa for the integration of new growth and poverty alleviation policies are presented. New international strategies in the context of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and the EU Strategy for Africa that aim at promoting pro-poor policies are discussed. Regional aspects of new growth and poverty alleviation strategies are analysed with regard to the case of South Africa. The South Africa of 2007 is a much different country from the South Africa of 1994, the year in which the country held its first democratic election. The country returned to positive per capita growth in the period since 1994. However, large challenges remain - the most glaring being the high levels of poverty and unemployment. Innovative strategies to address these challenges are discussed - incentives for sub-regional economic growth; improving the relationship between growth and employment; enhancing the role of education in the labour market; promoting Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment; and moving step by step towards a South African welfare state. New researches, initiatives and publications related to the theme are reviewed carefully in this Volume. This Volume builds the foundation for a comprehensive strategy of policy reforms in Africa so as to integrate new growth and poverty alleviation strategies. Complementary to Volume XIII is Volume XIV on New Growth and Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Africa - Institutional and Local Perspectives. Both Volumes are of importance for all those who work in African countries as officials, executives, managers, researchers, and policy-makers, but also for all those who actively support Africa's development concerns at the international, regional, country, local and project levels. They will experience this Volume XIII and also the complementary Volume XIV as indispensable sources of insight, reference and inspiration.
