This is first book in English dealing with the history of the Socialist International—the international alliance of social democratic parties—during the presidency of former German Chancellor Willy Brandt from 1976–1992. This book is based on thorough studies in numerous European and Latin American archives. It tries to avoid a Eurocentric view, giving equal importance to the Latin American and the European actors. It takes a fresh look at party diplomacy, a new kind of international diplomacy that was introduced by Willy Brandt in the field of international relations in the 1970s and 1980s. This study brings new insights in European as well as Latin American history of this time. It has a special focus on the role of Social Democrats (European as well as Latin American) in the civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua in the 1980s, and on its repercussions on domestic policies in Germany, Venezuela etc., and on the relations of those countries with the U.S. government.

How are the policies, meaning and ideology of social democracy changing and what is the context for this change? To what extent are social democratic parties converging or diverging according to national traditions? What criticism are there of recent social democracy and what alternatives exist? This book offers a distinctive approach to answering these questions. By drawing on a wide range of political and ideological perspectives, the contributors have produced an interdisciplinary work of great theoretical and empirical value. They analyze developments in social democracy against the background of globalization, Europeanization and different national traditions. The perspectives range from the critical to the sympathetic, including discussion of where social democracy is going, as well as the argument that it provides no future for radical politics at all.

New Rules For Global Justice written by Jan Aart Scholte and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-12 with Political Science categories.

Today’s globalised world means offshore finance, airport boutiques and high-speed Internet for some people, against dollar-a-day wages, used t-shirts, and illiteracy for others. How do these highly skewed global distributions happen, and what can be done to counter them? New Rules for Global Justice engages with widespread public disquiet around global inequality. It explores (mal)distributions in relation to country, class, gender and race, with international examples drawn from Australia to Zimbabwe. The book is action-oriented and empowering, presenting concrete proposals for ‘new rules’ in regard to climate change, corruption, finance, food, investment, the Internet, migration and more.

Social Democracy In The Global Periphery written by Richard Sandbrook and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-01 with Political Science categories.

Social Democracy in the Global Periphery focuses on social-democratic regimes in the developing world that have, to varying degrees, reconciled the needs of achieving growth through globalized markets with extensions of political, social and economic rights. The authors show that opportunities exist to achieve significant social progress, despite a global economic order that favours core industrial countries. Their findings derive from a comparative analysis of four exemplary cases: Kerala (India), Costa Rica, Mauritius and Chile (since 1990). Though unusual, the social and political conditions from which these developing-world social democracies arose are not unique; indeed, pragmatic and proactive social-democratic movements helped create these favourable conditions. The four exemplars have preserved or even improved their social achievements since neoliberalism emerged hegemonic in the 1980s. This demonstrates that certain social-democratic policies and practices - guided by a democratic developmental state - can enhance a national economy's global competitiveness.

This book examines policy and program in the key social democratic parties of Britain, France, Germany and Sweden since the 1970s and seeks to situate change in the context of capitalist restructuring. It examines mass unemployment, faltering economic performance, rising inflation and strainon welfare states. Callaghan shows how the radical Left within social democracy initially responded to the unfolding crisis of the post-war order and why it was ultimately defeated. Callaghan's analysis also reveals the extent of the divergence between British Labour's subsequent ideaologicalevolution and theat of its sister parties in continental Europe.
