This bibliography is an attempt to honor our fellow workers for their contributions to marine pollution as a scientific field. We also hope to increase the understanding and exchange of information from a global per spective. For the sake of younger workers, we hope that this exchange will prevent duplication of effort, the sad "reinvention of knowledge." An ulterior motive of ours is to create a living bibliography by not only having this document available as a printed text, but also as references with abstracts on word processor discs, so that researchers, teachers, and managers can update and expand this bibliography in their own fields of interest. We hope to be able to find a distributor for these discs in the near future. To establish greater communication we had hoped to have an appendix with author's names and addresses; however, we found that we had less than half of the senior authors' current addresses. Therefore, for subsequent editions, we hope our fellow scientists will keep us informed of their work and current addresses, and will bring to our attention any errors or papers that we have inadvertently missed. Our aim is to produce another edition in three years.

This study focuses on the state system and the problem of ocean degradation as practiced in the West, specifically the Western industrial market economies. The author locates the source of the ecological problem in the allocation of power and values in a society, the differing public policies in response to divergent appreciations on the nature of social challenges and appropriate responses. This book is a valuable contribution to the collective efforts to educate the public about the worsening global crisis. His approach combines biology, chemistry and political science in its discussion of the tragic destruction of our oceans. Contents: The Evolution of the Contemporary State System; Theoretical Aspects of the Current State System; The Physical State of the Ocean and the Pollution Crisis; The Contribution of Intergovernmental Organizations; INGOs and Cetacean Protection; Conclusions.

Plastic pollution is a growing environmental problem that is attracting increasing interest across society, from academics to the general public. A significant factor in the wide public interest in plastics is its visibility; present throughout urban and rural environments, washing up on beaches and even visible from space. However, 'invisible' microplastics and nanoplastics are also an issue. With growing plastic production and usage, plastic waste within the environment will continue to increase. This increased input along with its persistence leads to accumulation and increasing ecosystem exposure, with as-yet unknown consequences. This book brings together a collection of chapters written by world-leading experts in environmental plastic pollution inputs, fate, effects and solutions. It provides an accessible overview of the current scientific understanding, future implications and key considerations for the management and mitigation of plastic waste within the global ocean.Related Link(s)

Recycling plastic waste is often not the most economical choice due to a number of factors: contamination of plastics sent for recycling, logistical challenges in sorting various types of plastic; the inclusion of hard-to-recycle plastics in the waste stream; the use of dyes and additives in plastics, which limits the use of recycled resin; limited markets for recycled plastics; and the low cost o [...] Prevention is key: reducing the amount of plastic waste generated in the first place is the preferred approach in the Canada-wide Action Plan on Zero Plastic Waste - Phase 1. ii GLOBAL MARINE PLASTIC POLLUTION: SOURCES, SOLUTIONS AND CANADA'S ROLE 1 INTRODUCTION Images of the world's oceans strewn with plastic pollution, and of landfills piled high with plastic waste, have raised public concern. [...] To understand the issue of global plastic pollution, it is helpful consider the reasons behind the growth in the use of plastics and of the generation of plastic waste. [...] Incineration of plastic waste with energy recovery results in GHG emissions and may result in the emission of toxins with environmental and human health consequences, depending on the incinerator's design, operation and emissions controls.56 Figure 5 - Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment's Hierarchy of Priority in Plastic Management Source:. [...] As of 21 November 2019, the Charter had been signed by 21 countries, the European Union (EU), and 64 businesses and organizations.60 The Charter contains commitments regarding the recycling, reuse and recovery of plastics with the goal of halting their flow into the environment.
