Glial Neuronal Signaling fills a need for a monograph/textbook to be used in advanced courses or graduate seminars aimed at exploring glial-neuronal interactions. Even experts in the field will find useful the authoritative summaries of evidence on ion channels and transporters in glia, genes involved in signaling during development, metabolic cross talk and cooperation between astrocytes and neurons, to mention but a few of the timely summaries of a wide range of glial-neuronal interactions. The chapters are written by the top researchers in the field of glial-neuronal signaling, and cover the most current advances in this field. The book will also be of value to the workers in the field of cell biology in general. When we think about the brain we usually think about neurons. Although there are 100 billion neurons in mammalian brain, these cells do not constitute a majority. Quite the contrary, glial cells and other non-neuronal cells are 10-50 times more numerous than neurons. This book is meant to integrate the emerging body of information that has been accumulating, revealing the interactive nature of the brain's two major neural cell types, neurons and glia, in brain function.

This volume is made up of papers presented at the Second International Altschul Symposium: Biology and Pathology of Astrocyte-Neuron Interactions. The symposium was held in Saskatoon, Canada at the University of Saskatchewn in May, 1992 in memory of Rudolf Altschul, a graduate of the University of Prague and a pioneer in the fields of the biology of the vascular and nervous systems. Dr. Altschul was Professor and Head of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Saskatchewan from 1955 to 1963. The Altschul Symposia were made possible by an endowment left by Anni Altschul and by other contributions. The symposia are held biennially. One of the greatest challenges for present day scientists is to uncover the mechanisms of brain function. Although cellular anatomy of the nervous system has already been well outlined and indeed was delineated by the beginning of the century, experimental analysis of the function of the brain is relatively recent. The framework of the brain is made up of stellate cells, the astrocytes, which are interconnected by means of their processes, thus presenting a meshwork through which the neurons send their axons, accompanied by oligodendrocytes. Microglia are distributed throughout the brain.

This new book extensively explores a range of topics related to astrocyte-neuron interactions under multiple conditions, in both health and disease. These include the types of interactions that occur during development and the establishment of neuronal circuits that underlie learning and memory formation in various animal models as well as humans. Furthermore, the book addresses topics on how these interactions go awry in disease and injury. In addition, the authors propose inspiring new avenues to explore therapeutic approaches using astrocytes as targets. A cadre of international experts presents a broad range of views on the state-of-the-art of astrocyte-neuron interactions.

After the completion of the first edition of this series, this editor thought that a new edition would not be warranted in less than IS, perhaps 20, years, but it seems that we live in a time in which rapid changes are the norm and findings in a field such as neurochemistry develop exponentially. The task of a future editor attempting to get a comprehensive neurochemical handbook for the year 2000 would be even less enviable, but by then information processing may be very different. The approach, the design, and the areas covered by each volume and each chapter are necessarily arbitrary, and it is likely that other editors or authors would have approached the coverage or the organization in a different manner. It is hoped, however, that readers will find the series helpful for beginning or for continuing work. There may be some overlap among the various chapters, but insisting on single coverage of an area would at times have restricted treatment to only one point of view and might have truncated and hurt the logical flow of some of the chapters.

This volume explores the latest technologies used to study the co-existence of neuronal and neuron-glia synapses in the brain. The chapters in this volume are organized into three parts. Part One covers recent advancements in the technical approaches for studying glutamatergic signalling between neurons. Part Two highlights approaches to study the functional role of astrocytes at neuronal synapses. Part Three focuses on fast signalling at neuron-glia synapses, and highlights relevant methods for investigating these unusual synapses, including slice electrophysiology and in vivo gene delivery techniques. In the Neuromethods series style, all chapters contain key advices from experts in the field that are valuable for performing successful experiments on the topic in your laboratory. Cutting-edge and thorough, New Technologies for Glutamate Interactions: Neurons and Glia is a valuable resource for both neuronal and glial physiologists who are interested in learning about and developing new methods to further understand neuronal and neuron-glia synaptic transmission.

Interactions Between Neurons and Glia in Aging and Disease is a source of "reference reviews" and "concise overviews" of the functional cross-talk between neurons and glial cells, with a focus on microglia and inflammation in the aging brain and in neurological disorders. The scientific area covered by this book may be considered of key interest, and it is recognized, by the scientific community, as a major competitive area with critical implications for human health. This book is organized in three main sections that are expected to guide the readers from the basic functional cross-talk between neuron and glia to brain pathology. The specific proposed sections are: 1) Neuroimmunity and Neuroinflammation; 2) Signalling and inflammation in aging; 3) Neurodegeneration and inflammation in age related diseases.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute held in the Hotel Metropole Llandrindod Wells, Powys, Wales from July 26th to August 4th 1981 provided an excellent platform for presentation and appraisal of our current knowledge of neurotransmitter systems. The proceed ings comprise the present volume and these were arranged to allow study of the pathways and the interactions of specific transmitter systems, one with another, in the various sub-regions of the central nervous system. In addition several of the key factors involved in neurotransmitter release were highlighted. These include the structural and molecular organisation of the nerve terminal, its organelles (such as vesicles, neurotubules and synaptic densities) and the mechanisms involved in neurotransmitter release including the participation of calcium. The organisation of transmitter synthesis, storage and transport were discussed together with their linkage to other streams of metabolism, and the cellular compartmentation of these processes. In addition to the principal lectures given at the Institute, many part1c1pants presented short reports for discussion and these are all included in this volume. The success of the Study Institute was due to the careful planning of the scientific programme to allow a smooth flow and integration of the topics included and this is reflected in the organisation of this book. The programme committee members were, R. Balazs (London), H. F. Bradford (London,Director), J. B. Clark (London), J. E. Cremer (MRC, Carshalton), J. S. Kelly (London), L. Lim (London), M. J. Neal (London) and P. J. Roberts (Southampton).
