With increasing urbanization and development of society, advancement in geotechnical technologies is essential to the construction of infrastructures. Geotechnical Investigation is the first step of applying scientific methods and engineering principles to obtain solutions to civil engineering problems. The studies presented in this volume deal with the attempts made by scholars and engineers to address the latest development in geotechnical engineering such as characterization of geomaterials, slope stability, tunneling, mitigation of geohazards, and some other geotechnical issues that are quite relevant in today's world. This volume is based on contributions to the the GeoChina International Conference on Civil & Transportation Infrastructures: From Engineering to Smart & Green Life Cycle Solutions -- Nanchang, China, 2021.

Underground Engineering For Sustainable Urban Development written by National Research Council and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-26 with Technology & Engineering categories.

For thousands of years, the underground has provided humans refuge, useful resources, physical support for surface structures, and a place for spiritual or artistic expression. More recently, many urban services have been placed underground. Over this time, humans have rarely considered how underground space can contribute to or be engineered to maximize its contribution to the sustainability of society. As human activities begin to change the planet and population struggle to maintain satisfactory standards of living, placing new infrastructure and related facilities underground may be the most successful way to encourage or support the redirection of urban development into sustainable patterns. Well maintained, resilient, and adequately performing underground infrastructure, therefore, becomes an essential part of sustainability, but much remains to be learned about improving the sustainability of underground infrastructure itself. At the request of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Research Council (NRC) conducted a study to consider sustainable underground development in the urban environment, to identify research needed to maximize opportunities for using underground space, and to enhance understanding among the public and technical communities of the role of underground engineering in urban sustainability. Underground Engineering for Sustainable Urban Development explains the findings of researchers and practitioners with expertise in geotechnical engineering, underground design and construction, trenchless technologies, risk assessment, visualization techniques for geotechnical applications, sustainable infrastructure development, life cycle assessment, infrastructure policy and planning, and fire prevention, safety and ventilation in the underground. This report is intended to inform a future research track and will be of interest to a broad audience including those in the private and public sectors engaged in urban and facility planning and design, underground construction, and safety and security.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: A+, University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore (Quaid-E-Azam College Of Engineering & Technology), course: Geotechnical Engineering, language: English, abstract: The objective of this research is to develop a smartphone-based application for day-to-day practices in geotechnical engineering. The research presents a smartphone application for some basic geotechnical properties such as soil classification, settlement potential, swell potential and the bearing capacity of a foundation. The application will provide a robust estimation of geotechnical properties, for example soil classification, based on easy-to-determine properties such as index properties, unit weight and moisture content. The applicability of GeoEngineering was tested for the calculation and prediction of various soil properties like soil classification. Trial examples were considered for each case. Results obtained from both manual calculations and GeoEngineering were compared and found to be well in agreement. Based on the obtained results, GeoEngineering can be recommended for the day-to-day practices in geotechnical engineering for its simplicity and robust and easy to understand calculations.

We live in the age of high tech. Though engineering stands at centre stage becoming the key to survival, civil engineering is a much misunderstood and widely underestimated profession. It is a miserable paradox in its moment of ascendance and severely needed by society, civil engineering is frequently faced with the trivialization of its purpose and the debasement of its practice. Geotechnical engineering is without a doubt a huge deal in the construction industry that deals with the behavior of rock and ground materials which are all essential components in the construction sector. Having a deep understanding as to how these components behave and work as construction materials is crucial in order for project managers, builders and developers to measure the safety and efficiency of the structure that is about to be built. It is more than clear that geotechnics will continue to be primarily concerned with the idea of risk management. A geotechnical engineer needs to take things like the terrain stability (existing and potential landslides), element vulnerability and most importantly, consequences of failure. Based on this, they need to conduct an objective risk assessment and say whether the risk is acceptable/tolerable or not. It plays a key role in all civil engineering projects built on or in the ground, and it is vital for the assessment of natural hazards such as earthquakes, liquefaction, sinkholes, rock falls and landslides.Geotechnical Engineering brings together state of the art information to understand the current developments in the fields of rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics and foundation engineering, civil engineering, mining engineering, hydraulic engineering, petroleum engineering, engineering geology, etc. It presents comprehensive coverage on the experimental and theoretical aspects of rock mechanics, including laboratory and field testing, methods of computation and field observation of structural behavior. The chapters' content emphasizes the importance of geotechnical engineering, which is one of the several majors of civil engineering, on the development of lunar basis and lunar exploration. The book will be of interest towards materials scientists, metallurgists, mechanical and civil engineers, and can also be well used in education, research and industry.
