Barbara Hardy's Novels of George Eliot is a classic study of Eliots's outstanding powers as a great formal artist. The book's continuing appeal is due not simply to the perceptiveness and freshness of its writing but to the fact that form is interpreted in the widest sense to include whatever is relevant to the novels as organised, articulated, imaginative wholes and also as the direct expression of George Eliot's profound analysis of the human condition.

George Eliot's The Essays of "George Eliot" is a collection of literary essays written in the late 19th century, offering profound insights into human emotions, societal dynamics, and the essence of literature. The work, composed primarily of articles originally published in periodicals, provides a detailed exploration of the ideas and philosophies that established George Eliot as a leading female novelist of her time. The preface addresses readers' curiosity by introducing Eliot's early writings and emphasizing her exceptional talent for analyzing human motives and character. It highlights her distinct voice, setting her apart from contemporaries who focused primarily on storytelling. The opening essays delve deeply into the roles of women in society and literature. Eliot's perspective, illustrated through characters like Dorothea Brooke from her masterpiece Middlemarch, serves as a focal point. These discussions explore the gap between external appearances and internal realities and examine the constraints placed on women's lives. Through this, Eliot creates a rich dialogue about identity, societal expectations, and emotional depth. This refined explanation underscores that Eliot's work transcends its era as a mere reflection of women's issues, serving as an insightful literary exploration of human and social nature.

Best known for his brief marriage to George Eliot, John Walter Cross (1840-1924) compiled this three-volume 'autobiography' of 1885 from his late wife's journals and letters. Eliot was never married to her long-term partner G. H. Lewes, and she courted further scandal when she married Cross, twenty years her junior, in the spring of 1880. While these volumes offer a valuable insight into Eliot's private reflections, what is perhaps most telling is the material left out or rewritten in Cross' efforts to lend his wife's unconventional life some respectability, which he does at the expense of what one reviewer described as Eliot's 'salt and spice'. George Eliot's Life will be of particular interest to scholars of nineteenth-century biography and literature. Volume 3 focuses on Eliot's final years, including her later literary success, travels in Spain, the death of G. H. Lewes, and her marriage to Cross.

In this wonderful addition to the Eminent Lives series, widely acclaimed biographer Brenda Maddox sheds a fascinating new light on the life of legendary novelist George Eliot. On 22 November 1819, Mary Ann Evans was born on a farm in rural Warwickshire. In 1880, she died in London as George Eliot, one of the most famous authors of her generation. Today, she is celebrated as one of the greatest novelists in history, a woman who not only captured her readers' imaginations but won their hearts. Her many novels are as appreciated now as they were in the nineteenth century; but her unconventional and intriguing personal life, a story in itself, is less well known. Raised in obscurity, Mary Ann Evans was fiercely intellectual from an early age. She moved from one school to the next, a bright, fervent child with a nervous disposition. As a young - and conspicuously plain - woman without prospect of romance, by the time she was in her twenties Mary Ann had resigned herself to a life alone. But a move to London in pursuit of journalistic work proved fateful. For it was there that she met the married George Henry Lewes - an author and scientist whose intellect and nervous energy matched her own. When Mary Ann took him as a partner, defying the crippling social censure that followed, her life changed forever. Taking Lewes's name in her private life, Mary Ann as 'George Eliot' produced novel after novel, redefining English literature as she did so. In this revealing biography, Brenda Maddox explores the woman behind the books: a troubled child, an ambitious young career woman, and an almost-wife. Intertwining her novels and her life story, Maddox sheds a fresh new light on one of English literature's most significant, complex and courageous figures.

Reading George Eliot's work was described by one Victorian critic as like the feeling of entering the confessional in which the novelist sees and hears all the secrets of human psychology—'that roar which lies on the other side of silence'. This new biography of George Eliot goes beyond the much-told story of her life. It gives an account of what it means to become a novelist, and to think like a novelist: in particular a realist novelist for whom art exists not for art's sake but in the exploration and service of human life. It shows the formation and the workings of George Eliot's mind as it plays into her creation of some of the greatest novels of the Victorian era. When at the age of 37 Marian Evans became George Eliot, this change followed long mental preparation and personal suffering. During this time she related her power of intelligence to her capacity for feeling: discovering that her thinking and her art had to combine both. That was the great ambition of her novels—not to be mere pastimes or fictions but experiments in life and helps in living, through the deepest account of human complexity available. Philip Davis's illuminating new biography will enable you both to see through George Eliot's eyes and to feel what it is like to be seen by her, in the imaginative involvement of her readers with her characters.
