Excerpt from The Guyot Geographical Reader and Primer: A Series of Journeys Round the World Gutot's Introduction has been pronounced by competent authorities to be the best of school reading books. This judgment has led the publishers to present this work in a form more attractive and available for class-room uses. The occasion has been improved to revise it thoroughly, and by changes, additions, and omissions to give it a completeness such as is indicated by its new name. The value of such a Reader is obvious. The material presented is interesting and useful as matter of knowledge; its familiar and colloquial style awakens interest in the subject, creates easy and natural tones of expression, and leaves a lasting impression on the mind. In order to complete its usefulness as a class book, the leading geographical facts are gathered up and presented in Part II. as a Primer of Lessons. This part is a brief outline of geography for beginners; noticing the location and commercial and political character of the countries, the nature of which, with much of their life has been given in Part I. The form of these lessons, and their intimate connection with the readings, are such as to make mere repetition of words without thoughts altogether impossible. The Guyot Geographical Reader and Primer is believed to embody, both in the choice of material for its grade and in the mode of treatment, the best results of thought and experience on the part of the most earnest and practical educators. Excerpt from Carpenter's Geographical Reader: Asia This book is intended to be used as a reader in connection with the study of geography. It is hoped that it will put life into the skeletons known as the maps and clothe them with the flesh and blood of human interest, making the various countries and peoples of Asia a living whole in the minds of the children. It may be used also for the teaching of reading, the story holding the pupils attention and at the same time giving him an introduction to the study of geography and training him to think along geographical lines. Instead of the title chosen, the book might be called "A Trip over Asia with the Children"; for it is the record of a personally conducted tour of the Asiatic continent which is supposed to be made by every child who reads it. It is the children who do the traveling over seas and lands, and it is they who visit their little world brothers and sisters, seeing them at their work and their play, staying with them in their homes and learning just how they live. It is the children who, as they travel over the several countries, observe the geographical features which have so much to do with making those countries what they are, and in creating the industries and the place which their inhabitants have in the commerce and work of the world. In these travels the children learn things by their own experiences and observations. They study the oceans on the steamers, and see the work of the great rivers as they travel upon them in boats.
