Education Planning And Management And The Use Of Geographical Information Systems written by John M. Mendelsohn and has been published by UNESCO this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Education categories.
Education depends on resources that may be tangible (teachers, facilities, textbooks, money) or intangible (political will, parental support). Considerations of space, usually in the form of questions containing the word "where", constitute another resource issue that confronts educational managers almost daily. Questions like "Where are new schools needed?" and "Where are the best bus routes for pupil transportation?" require answers that are often only available after exhaustive and expensive research. A Geographical Information System (GIS) is a computer program designed to capture, collect, store, and process the type of information needed to answer the "where" questions, and to make that information available to educational planners. Following explanations of maps, spatial information, attribute information, and ways to relate these through the use of geocodes, this book provides detailed instructions on developing a GIS and extracting and analyzing data for use in educational management. Maps are emphasized as a particularly accessible GIS product, and situations that exist in developing countries frequently appear as illustrative examples in the text. Recommendations are made for computer hardware and software, as well as personnel and staffing. (Contains 20 figures and 27 references.) (MKW)

The rapid recent developments in digital mapping technology and the increasing demand for geo-referenced small area population data have been the main motivation for the present handbook. The Handbook provides guidance on how to ensure consistency and facilitate census operations; support data collection and help monitor census activities during enumeration; and facilitate presentation, analysis and dissemination of census results. Along with an overview of geographic information systems and digital mapping, the publication discusses cost-benefit analysis of an investment in digital cartography and geographical information systems (GIS); the use of GIS during census enumeration; and describes the role of GIS and digital mapping in the post-censal phase [from UN website].
